The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 Overclocking Club - Page 80

Sound's good maybe I should just wait till the next gen comes out before I get my next GPU
post #792 of 845
Wait till the 7xx comes out, it should only be another couple of months. The mobile 7xx are already out so the desktops will be out soon. At the very least the 6xx will come down in price.
Playing COD Black Ops 2, I have almost doubled my fps in certain sections. With maxed graphics and AA without overclock some parts run at around 30fps, with my +50% overclock (607 to 910) everything runs at 60fps all the time.
Overclock is always worth it so far as I'm concerned.

I'm waiting to either get 2 gtx680 or 2 770s depending on how much better the 7s are than the 6s. I kinda hope the 7s are only 10 - 15% faster so i can get a pair of cheaaaap 680s without too big a performance hit biggrin.gif

If maxwell lives up to what we're expecting it's going to be far superior to the 600 series and the 7000 series.. I had planned on two 7970s hell i have two (gotta sale one cause it's a POS) but been looking at monitors specifically the Asus VG248QE and between lightboost and 3D i feel like i should've gotten the 680. That said i still love my 7970s.

the geforce 7xx is going to be a kepler refresh with the gk114 chip probably, so I couldn't imagine them being much more than 15% better than the 6xx series.
When the 8xx comes out that'll be maxwell with an x86 arm chip included on board, but I just can't wait another year!

I hope your right because i want my 7970s to last. Almost feel like this is a bad time to upgrade with Haswell, Sea Islands, etc. on the brink of release around 6 months from now.

I'm pretty sure it'll be more than 6 months away, probably closer to 12. If Moore's law holds then the sea islands/maxwell will be something like 100% faster than the keplers and south islands.
But that happens every 18 months, so it's always a bad time to upgrade haha.

My GTX470 has destroyed every game i've thrown at it (especially with the 50% oc) since about 2008 so if I get 2 x 680s they should hammer everything for the next 4 years or so. HOWEVER... next gen consoles coming out this year may push game developers to use gfx tech that is a step up from the kepler/south island.
So maybe it's worth holding on till after the ps4 and xbox720 or whatever launch.

I try to make things last at least 5 years before upgrade. I got a LGA2011 (x79) mobo and i7 chip because a leaked intel roadmap says that the ivy bridge-e chips will have 2011 pins so i can upgrade to those chips in 18 months or 2 years. I'm just praying to the cpu gods that they will be back compatible with the x79 boards!

I think I just convinced myself to wait the extra year for the maxwell chips tongue.gif
Hot damn.

Lol i'm upgrading from Deneb (PHII 955) to Ivy Bridge (3570k) hopefully haswell isn't to big of a jump. My 470 has held me the longest as far as GPU is concerned until this christmas. Hell i didn't honestly need to upgrade it was choice. Other than Crysis 3 there really isn't anything the 470/480 can't play and still look good with good framerates.

I just recently read about lightboost and 3d gaming so kinda makes me wish i would've gotten a 670. Since i already have my 7970 though i'm going to add another. That's one thing i do love about my diamond on stock volts (1112mv) i'm at 1125/1575 with no problem. Benched at 1150/1600, upped voltage to 1137mv and benched at 1200/1700. Thinking once i get on water she's going to do great.

Agreed on the green side of things the 670 is right behind the 680 most of the time, if you plan on OCing and get a good clocking card a 680 doesn't justify the extra 100+ or IMO at least. The reason i have 7970s is because you can get them near/around 400$. I really didn't want to pay around 5 for a card.

7970 looks like a great card too. I mostly went with a 670 because i was coming from a 470 and that was the upgrade path of least resistance. FarCry3 was the game that finally pushed me over the edge to upgrade. Everything else I threw at the 470 was no problem for it, but FC3 was finally too much.

Maybe in my next gaming rig I'll think about sli/xfire. I've been wondering how much vertical orientation helps with multiple gpus so there is no card stuck on top sucking up heat produced by the bottom card? Although with liquid cooling on the gpus I guess orientation wouldn't matter much. I don't have any plans to get a new rig anytime soon so its just an idle interest at this point.
