Do you need 120fps to get the benefit from 120hz monitor?

Let's say someone has an average rig, is running Starcraft 2 on Extreme and is only hitting 50 fps in game, if he had a 120hz monitor would he notice any improvements? Or would his fps in game be too low to see any benefit?

It would still look smoother because the frames are refreshing twice as quick. Though the smoothest experience would be at 120FPS.

Apparently you cant see over about 55fps,
but i think we can see higher as on a 60hz lcd i can sometimes see flickering on a white background.

so if I want to use that entire 120hz I'd need a card that can put out 120fps, correct?

Even at 50 fps, the 120hz lcd experience would still be a good one. Still worth getting imo.
