[TF] Google Starts Censoring BitTorrent, RapidShare and More - Page 13

I find it very interesting that while there are some complaints about the article is misleading in title, but no one actually sees the ramifications of the how the title of the article itself is part of the whole spin. In my Mass Communications class, there was one concept that truly struck me during discussion one day when the Prof asked us, "Can the Mass Media tell people what to think?" In truth, the Media doesn't actually have the power to do that, BUT it does have considerable influence over what we think ABOUT. I notice that many articles that are the subject of hot debate over piracy and p2p often contain language that is leading and actually incorrect in the context surrounding the topic, such as the word "filesharing" almost always being paired with the word "illegal" although the legality of sharing is entirely dependent upon the specific item being shared. This is effectively conditioning people to accept that all filesharing is criminal behavior. The non-news still serves a purpose just by being a vehicle to condition our attitudes towards ideas; the RIAA is delighted to have another chance to suggest that "illegal filesharing" is the predominant if not only kind through such an article. It is very effective propaganda if one doesn't pay attention to the details.

Regardless of the fact that this change in behavior is now only affecting the instant results (which I already despise as a feature which almost always points me somewhere other than where I intend to go) it should be making people angry - especially coming from Google who has positioned themselves as champions of anti-evil. The comment "Treating everything the same is not 'open support'" is spot on. By deciding for anyone what appears in search results (no matter what method is used to obtain them) based on its offensiveness or moral valuation it throws all neutrality and objectivity out the window. And in response to the idea that people can find something if they are looking for it: what happens when it affects more than just the instant results because no one complained when that was allowed to discriminate between terms?

Google is huge and anything it does to "adjust" results will have an impact - which is a notion that is supported by the fact that I have to TURN OFF the instant feature in order to successfully get the results I want the first time (and I don't even search for torrents). The fact that it has an opinion about what I am typing generally fubars my search because its opinion, though often popular, is also often wrong. This decision is solely influenced by big money and falls well outside the Google "don't be evil" creed.

It isn't so much a problem how it practically affects us now, but rather what it opens the door for potentially in the future as we get used to letting other people (corporations) THINK and DECIDE for us. Just because there is a workaround doesn't make it ok, nor just because it doesn't affect you personally. Trust me, when the word "democracy" becomes a blacklisted term, by then it will be too late to become indignant. Pay attention, people. The limiting of information is an excellent tool for control. There is profound truth in the saying "Knowledge is Power" and restricting one effectively restricts the other.

Meh, Google censors things all the time, including search results. Anyone that seriously thinks that Google is anti-censorship (unless it suits their own agenda) is deluded.

Although this really wont affect anyone, be warned it is these little things that will lead up to much bigger censorship.

This. Google is already in trouble for packet sniffing with their photo cars that drive around. There got some of their start op funding from the NSA it is now admitted.

Because they are a front company of the governments own creation. And creating a large database of information about EVERYONE and EVERYTHING. For what particular reason... Well I'm not completely sure, but I do know it has to deal with human behavior and predicting trends.

Who cares about this really? They are only taking it away from auto complete and instant search. Just type in what you want and press enter and you get all the results you want. Google is making big industry happy while leaving us everything we want anyways. Sit down, shut up and keep on searching as normal. This is great that google did this. Keep the big guys happy while we still get to do what we were doing before... just with an extra press of a button is all.

If you are complaining about this you have have seriously consider how lazy a person you must be to be up in arms about finishing what you started typing and pressing enter.
