If your basis for business implies freedom of speech and freedom of information, then you start to censor information you go against everything that you were about.

And Google does tarnish it's image because it has been doing some many things that are against privacy. It's just the fact that Google has a monopoly of sorts so that regardless of what they do still so many people will use there services blindly.

I use piratebay all the time but that was a nice (wrong) assumption on your part.

Same reason anyone else would.

Give up without a fight one too many times and you look like easy pickings for anyone who can half-ass a threat. It seems even more irrational to not resist when it's fairly obvious that Google wouldn't even have to put up much of a fight to win.

I intend migrate away from G-mail (which is going to be a major pain), and don't specifically use any other Google product, but beyond that, I'm not sure I have much of a choice. Google is omnipresent on the internet. "Ads by Google" are everywhere, and disabling them is as much a harm to sites I patronize as it is to Google. Guess I don't really have a choice though; time to get a good ad blocker.

There are many perfectly legitimate uses for BitTorrent clients and file sharing sites, and no one could possibly make a competent argument against this point. When a site as a torrent option for their downloads, I use it. They are often faster, and help the creators of the material save on bandwidth costs. The last things I torrented were: LibreOffice, a multi-gig total conversion for Crysis, a pile of public domain PDFs, and some of my own damn original content.

What's the relevance of 2011? Media distributors have no more legal ground to object to Google treating these search terms as any other than they have had before. If anything they have less.

It's not unreasonable for Google to cave to economic pressures, but they have caved so easily on so many things that they are jeopardizing the profits they seek to protect.

A public defender could likely get any lawsuit attempting to require Google to turn off auto-complete on any specific search terms thrown out.

The only repercussions they face are business ones, which I admit could potentially be just as bad for the bottom line.

Discriminating against search terms is hurting their image.
There may by legit reason to use it but the vast majority of what it is actually used for is illegal so to say that it should be ok because in theory it can be used legally is simply to ignore the reality of the situation and there is no intelligence in that.

So, you're saying they should fight it in order to uphold their image as a tough guy business. They should over-ride all other factors including revenue to do that?

Other words or phrases google doesnt auto-fill/auto-serach:

Porn (legal)
Murder
Fetish
pretty much any swear word
nude

These are just a few obvious ones but porn is not even illegal so any argument that there is a good reason for google to have its auto-fill/search work on stuff that is (for the most part) illegal is just wrong. There is no logical argument or reasoning for this. Your freedoms are not being hindered, thats fear mongering.

I see a far bigger problem with condemning a tool because of what it can do than with going after individuals that use it illicitly, even if they are a significant portion of it's users.

If but one single person in a billion uses torrents for legitimate reasons, that should be more than enough, in my opinion.

I'll not damn the innocent along with the guilty, regardless of how imbalanced the ratio is one way or another.

I have the same problems with them censoring any of those terms.

I never said my freedoms were being hindered, just that Google was guilty of a level of censorship I do not agree with.

Google is free to do as they like, doesn't mean they aren't hypocritical scum.
