[Gizmag] Breakthrough promises $1.50/ gallon synthetic gasoline, no carbon emissions - Page 7

I am so sick of reading about technologies that will help me that I know will never come to fruition.

clearly no one read the actual website....

"Our current composite material uses ammonia borane NH3BH3 as the hydride and polystyrene as the polymer nano-scaffold. Ammonia borane in its normal state releases 12wt% of hydrogen at temperatures between 110°C and 150°C, but with very slow kinetics. In our materials the accessible hydrogen content is reduced to 6wt% but the temperature of operation is reduced so that it starts releasing hydrogen below 80°C and the kinetics are an order of magnitude faster. Although ideal for our proof-of-concept work and potentially useful for the initial demonstrator projects it is not currently a viable commercial material: it is expensive to make and cannot be easily re-hydrided or chemically recycled."

In short, it a really really good idea if there were three cars on the planet.

BTW, I heard of a technology like this one time. The company was Millennium Cell Inc. They are out of business.

Would this decrease the power output of cars?

u are absolutely right , anyone who never been to ny should smell the smoggy air and wake up to reality...however as a jeep owner i kinda want cheaper gas

Holy crap, unlimited renewable fossil fuels, cold fusion and now a synthetic gasoline that has no draw backs at all, all in the same week!

Did someone change how April Fools day works?

I still think if they can find a way to bring gas back down to, at least, under $2/gal, it would straighten out this recession quicker than anything else they are trying to do. Seems they can't figure out that when gas prices sky-rocketed, the ecomomy went to hell because everything else went up in price because of it.
WOW, the first person I've heard who I haven't had to tell this concept to!

$4/gallon gas jumpstarted the recession. It very well may not have happened at all, if gas prices hadn't shot up so much. Working-class people had to suddenly spend a good portion of their income on gas, and couldn't continue to make payments on other things. Businesses had to suddenly spend more on freight to ship goods, subsequently raising the prices of goods, which subsequently means even less cash in the pocket of working-class people. Less margin in company goods meant lower profits, which meant layoffs. Etc etc...

Politicians don't seem to realize this. The general public doesn't seem to realize this, namely because the media hasn't told them. Greenies seem to think that higher gas/energy prices are a GOOD thing, because it'll help conservation. While it might help conservation in the smallest of ways, it certainly hurts production and the economy. People still need to get from A to B, and still need to heat their house.

Octane doesn't make power. Octane prevents knock. With less knock, you can tune for more power.

Some ECU's will lower timing (and thus power) if you put lower grade fuel in the car though...

can be used in existing internal combustion engined vehicles without engine modification.
I very much doubt that. Some slight modification, maybe. But just imagine how many cars would have to be converted. Garages are going to become mints.

I am aware of this, I wasn't sure of better explanation that everyone will understand.

What I mean is I either want my HP and more importantly my TQ to stay where they are now or to increase.

So if this goes through, that means i can get a Dodge Ram 1500 (The 4-Door one) because now i could actually afford the gas.
