(GT) Direct2Drive Now Offering Rentals

While the reigning king of the digital download universe is still Steam, the other major players in the digital distribution market are still in the game, offering features that Valve’s service does not. Among them is Direct2Drive, who just launched their rental service last week.

While not very many games are available to rent over the service (at the moment, only Divinity II – Ego Draconis, F.E.A.R., Race Driver: Grid, and Silent Hill: Homecoming are available), the selection is expected to grow. The gist of the service has D2D charging you $5 to play the game for five hours, after which point you’ll be able to purchase the game with the $5 you’ve already spent being knocked off the grand total.

While there are other services that offer rentals on their titles (OnLive for example offers three and five day rentals priced at $5.99 and $8.99 respectively), they are few and far between. Additionally, considering how PC demos are becoming increasingly rare, rentals might become more and more of an attractive prospect to both potential customers and publishers.

What do you think? Are digital rentals of PC games a good idea? Let us know in the comments!
Just the other day a group of pirates on a thread said you can't rent PC games and also "I only download a game to see if it's good or not and if it is any good I'll buy it".
No more excuses now as far as I'm aware.

What do you think about renting PC games from Direct2Drive?

Im one of the pirates who download to try, and ill continue to do that, im not paying to see if i like it, there should be a demo!

if they are to lazy to give a demo, ill be lazy to spend 5 dollars.

I do really buy all the games i like, 96 games on steam alone.

anyhow, i do like the idea as a rental service, but not as a replacement for demos.

only 5 hours? a day or 2 would be more reasonable. If the game was free for 5 hours, I'd try it out definitely. I think that would be a great move as well, because then no one has an excuse to pirate their games.

Why would I ever pay $5? Wow that's a steep price for only 5 hours of usage. It should be lower imop.

The PC game market get plenty from my wallet. Renting games would be awesome. Hopefully steam starts providing this service soon.

Yep, this is dumb. It's not very practical imop. Waste of $5. For many games, just wait a few months and you can buy the full version for $10 or less.

I've bought all for $10 or less recently:
Mass Effect 2
Darksiders
Bioshock 2
Lara Croft: Guardian of the Light
Left For Dead 2
Just Cause 2
Dead Space
Battlefield 2: Bad Company
