Build Brainstorming

Thread Starter
Hello everyone!

I could use some advice on a build I plan on putting together within the next few months.

This is my current rig:
MoBo: MSI K9A2 Platinum
CPU: Phenom 9950 OC to 2940 Mhz - Cooled with Cooler Master GeminII S
Mem: 8gb ddr2 at 840
GPU: 2 4850 1gb in Crossfire
HDD: Seagate Barracudas-320gb(7200.11) for Windows, 400gb(7200.10) for Linux
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750
Optical: 2 DVD burners
Sound: X-Fi titanium
Case: I don't even remember. Spent about $40 on a case to get the first 4850. Mid tower and 3 fans(120x2,220) is all I can tell you.
Monitor: 2 Samsung SyncMaster 2343 in dulaview, resolution at 2048x1152 each. For games, I bring it down to one.

For a while now, I'v been planning on upgrading but didn't see the point. The aforementioned(hehe, always like using that word ) rig can still run games max or near max. However, I'm starting to get into 3d stuff and rendering with a 9950 is almost like shaving with a loaf of bread. My plan was to just upgrade, but I figured I could use my old computer to render while I kick butt on my new rig( and if my friends upgrade, I'm going to try and get their CPUs for a quick and dirty render farm that we could all use). Also, I'd just like to put rig together and reclaim my throne as the biggest beast!

At this point, my plan is to just build a rig and use my current GPUs(which will allow me to get better parts overall) and get some sweet Southern Islands love when they eventually come out. I have saved up, about $1000 for this so I figured on getting something along these lines, although nothing is definite and no specific parts are selected yet.

CPU: 300(BD possibly)
MoBo: 150
Mem: 150
Case: 150
HDD/SSD: ??????

I haven't figured out what i want to do yet in terms of storage. Would a SSD boot drive and 2 WD Caviar Blacks in RAID 0 be good? By the time you read this sentence, you already realized I have not mentioned a RAID controller at all. Yes, I would be using onboard RAID. Yes, I know it's not exactly great but it's something right? (good hardware RAID controllers are just more than I would like to spend)

I'm open to any and all suggestions, even if I didn't mention it.

Almost forgot! Possible voyage into the mysterious world of liquid cooling down the road. Possible Christmas gift?

Thanks!

For 8GB of DDR3 if you don't mind going 4x2GB you only need around $100-$130 for some good kits.
Hopefully a 990X motherboard will launch in the ~$125 range and be fairly good
Case: NZXT Tempest EVO for $90 shipped and you're done. Has eATX support, fans, window, good look... absolutely everything you need for a low price.
I'd rather just get a simple SSD boot drive and one hard drive without RAID 0 but that is your choice; SSD + Samsung F3 1TB RAID could be a good choice.
