Maximum Safe Overclock i7 920?

Thread Starter
What would be a solid target speed to aim for considering the following:

i7 920 D0 step (about 1 yr old, never OC'ed before)
6 GB Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 CL 8-8-8-24
Noctua NH-U12P
Haf 932 standard stock fan arrangement
HD 5870 (stock)
Corsair TX750 PSU

Not looking to blow the doors off the machine, just a decent increase that wont tax out the PSU or the cooling arrangement as neither of those are in the budget to replace at the moment.

I've seen 3.2-3.5 GHz mentioned alot but invariably a lot of those rigs are using water cooling kits.

Any thoughts, tips or advice welcomed.

Yup 4.0 is pretty easy, after that you have to start really tweaking and manually setting everything in BIOS.

I would say 4.2ghz plus for watercooling kits or a custom water cooler, unless you like really cool temps. You can probably get up to 4ghz safely and run some stress test to see what temps you get. I would say it would be better to have a cpu that can take a high overclock at a low voltage. I would say below 75c would be a safe temp for load. Just look at some guides and run prime 95.

Wicked quick replies, thanks much! My rig is currently running with 1333 CL 9-9-9-24 memory, so once I get the 1600 kit, I will give it a try. Thanks again.

4.0GHz easily.

Set base clock to 191.
Set multiplier to 21x.
Set CPU voltage to about 1.27 or so.

Test for stability.
Monitor temps.
Done.

I think guys are getting as high as 3.8 on stock settings for power. I haven't been able to but I have one machine doing it at 1.17v and folding 24/7. It's a modest oc but it's an HTPC so I have to go easy on the heat.

If you dial in you oc, keep the ram freq low-ish until the CPU is stable. That way you're not left wondering if it's your ram or your CPU that is causing trouble.

Unless leaving it on auto will do that for him I suppose? Anyway if you dial in you oc, keep the ram freq low-ish.

By default, the RAM multipliers are set quite low. I help people do this every day, I'm not "frying" anyone's RAM. Don't be silly with this "liable" drivel. Even if the RAM multiplier was set the whole way up to 8x, a base clock of 191 would still set the frequency at 1538MHz, below the 1600 he says his is rated for.

If you go too high on your RAM, you would just not post or you'd lock up. Just like how we deal with overclocks every day. I'm not asking him to turn his DRAM voltage up. He's not going to "fry" anything.

Did a quick zip though that guide ( at work, will read it through at home ) and I noticed the Hyper-threading creating a lot of heat. Should I just go ahead right off the bat and disable it. I don't do any encoding, or anything even remotely taxing multiple cores on this machine. Other than gaming and surfing the net, this big guy is essentially dormant.
