Keyboard Issue on Laptop

Greets folks

My girlfriend is having issues with her laptop keyboard so I am trying to get some information. The laptop in question is a Acer Aspire AS5739G-6132.

The issue is that the stock laptop keyboard just doesn't function well..it often misses keystrokes (as in they just don't register) so you may have to hit a button 4-5 times. She described it to me as saying "Every 3-4 secs, whatever key I am pushing will not register and I will have to push it 3-4 times as if something was stopping me from writing". We tried to update the SATA drivers, the Chipset drivers, the Trackpad drivers, pretty much everything that looked relevant, but have not had any luck yet.

Any external keyboards functions flawlessly but as soon as it goes back to the onboard keyboard, the problem occurs.

Going to try to get some more details but I figured I would put up some preliminary info in case anyone knows a quick fix.

Thanks!

Is this a problem with random keys, or has it been isolated to certain keys? Ironically I am returning my Acer Aspire AS7741G-7017 due to the "u" key working maybe 20% of the time unless I literally smack my finger on the key.

If you can boot to a Live CD of some sort, and test the key functions there, that would eliminate any software possibilities.

It seems to be more prevalent on certain keys..she mentions she can force the issue with keys like C D E Z X R V, but other keys like A B don't seem to do it.

It seems to be the same issue you described, the key will function but not all the time and you have to jam it pretty good.

Did you get any info from Acer about it? They just recommended RMA? I believe this laptop is way out of warranty unfortunately

I'll keep a long story short. I just ordered the laptop on 1/17. I had to return it due to LCD problems. I got another brand new laptop from amazon (amazon's return policy rocks BTW, kudos to them), and this one had a bad "u" key. So I just submitted a return for a refund. 0/2, not going 0/3!

you have a bad keyboard.... its more common than you think in laptops. Just return it. I bought a new HP laptop a few months ago and noticed the 'n' key would miss here and there and the spacebar was requiring hard taps to work... exchanged for a different laptop of same model.. and works flawlessly.

It may be static build up in the computer. I was skeptical when I first heard it too till my dad called HP to help a friend. What they did was pulled the battery, unplugged the AC, and discharged the system by holding the power button down for 30sec to 2mins. Worked flawlessly after that. Now its the first thing I do when someone brings me a laptop with keyboard/trackpad issues.

Is the warranty still good? I'd first contact Acer and see what they can do.

This definitely sounds like a mechanical issue. Software seems in check.

Next have you tried dusting out the keyboard? Maybe its just dirty o.O

If you're determined to fix it yourself take it apart, and re-seat the connector. again, maybe its just dust.

and finally as a last resort, you can replace the keyboard assembly by getting a new one off eBay or somtin.

G'luck!
