Is this really a reference 5870? - Page 4

Just to let you know from my experience, I ordered a Diamond HD5850 (shown as a reference on newegg) a couple weeks back. But when I go the card and opened the box, they sent me a non-reference card. I called newegg and thy refunded me my money, huge pain to send back though. I'm willing to bet that that card isn't reference either. I checked Diamond's website (which also shows a reference card), and they only have one model of HD5850 (with the same model number as the one I ordered). False advertising if you ask me.

I wouldn't trust them. They screwed me when I ordered a 5770 Diamond from them (with the full cooler picture) and sent me a non-reference little bird cage cooler.
Now I don't know about the 5870 in question, I'm looking for one myself and am VERY hesitant on getting one from the Egg or even Diamond, as they sent me a little bird cage cooler one too. (with the same full cooler pictured in their ad too)
Same thing happened to this guy.

I'm a little outdated I know, sorta running on a budget at the moment and I'm pretty new in the PC building/modding game. But anyways, I just recently picked this card up at a local Micro Center cause I saw alot of good reviews online and I expected the card to look like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814103086

But instead it came out looking like this (sorry for my bad quality camera phone picture):
http://i52.tinypic.com/343hrhv.jpg

Yeah, looks pretty ugly compared to the other one. The specs are the same as well, PCIE 1GB GDDR5. It came in the same box as the newegg one with the manual, driver cd, etc. The 5770 I bought from Microcenter has 1 Dual Link DVI-I port, 1 HDMI, and 1 Display Port. And it also came with a DVI-I to VGA Adapter. The labels/stickers that are under the card say 5770 1GB GDDR5, so most likely its legitimate but I was just wondering what should I do, keep the card, or exchange it with something else.

Answer.

I'm by no means an expert, but I believe you have a non-reference version. I found a picture of your card here but the model number ends a little differently that the one you have in your post. Just be glad you didn't get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814103103 <--- This is what they sent me.

One newegg review suggest that it is no longer reference.
Quote:
Cons: I ordered this card thinking that the card would match my stock 5870 card from Sapphire because of the picture provided by Newegg. I got this card on 7/3/10 and it looks nothing like the picture provided. This is the ugliest and probably the cheapest fan and heatsink design I have ever seen in my life. I didn't even try to install and crossfire it. The card might work just fine, but as far a build and style, "Blah". I will go with a superior company like Asus or Sapphire again even if the two cards probably won't match.

Have you never seen a 5870 before? I don't even know what to say about your comment.

Yes, I saw this reply too. There's also one on the 3rd page from 09 saying, he didn't like the picture of the ugly girl on the cooler. So that tells me that in 09 they DID offer the full (reference) cooler (when this pic was added) but later, and now they're shipping the non-reference, small cooler version in it's place. And it's not only the Egg, all sites are displaying the wrong picture. I bought a couple Diamond 5770s from different sites and 2 of them where non-reference, small cooler versions. I ended up with 1 good Diamond and then went with Sapphire for the other good reference card. So I'm staying away from that Diamond 5870. TigerDirect has some good Sapphires left.

What is up with all the hurt feelings police on OCN lately?

Anyways I think from some of the reviews on the egg, ppl have gotten non ref cards so take that into account. They are probably left over stock, grab bag style.

The moment wankers stop being wankers then you won't see the Police...lol.

OP the chances of getting a vanilla 5000 series new retail are next to none this late in the product life cycle, I wished that these eTailers would updated their pics on their sites.
I ordered 2 Radeon 5770's because the pic was of the Vanilla Sapphire card and all I got was the V2 egg cooler ones, that gave me a sad face then I had read that the egg cooler beat the Vanilla cooler so my sad face turned into a happy one.

Then the same again when I bought my pair of 6870's, same again they where Sapphire cards and the website displayed the Vanilla cards once again and again I got the V2's. This time I emailed them about it and they changed the pic and offered me a replacement pair or my money back. But now if I see or hear about the changes I let them know and they change the pics.

I ended up getting the Sapphire 2GB Eyefinity 6 version for $40 more @$280. Plus the guarantee that it's the reference, full cooler version.
Here's a pic of the latest 5870 non-reference card from Diamond that someone just received after ordering one of the pictured reference full cooler ad. Looks better then the bird cage I got and the OCed versions little cooler. Looks like the same heatsink just different plastic, as it has heat pipes. But with the alternate fan position and fan type that will blow hot air into the case.
And the second 2 are the 5770s they sent me. The bird cage Diamond, and the good reference Sapphire I kept. (plus another good Diamond. Returned 2)

Picked up that $234 Diamond 5870 but got it from Amazon because Newegg charges sales tax in TN and it is definitely reference. It even has reference AMD vbios which I promptly flashed to the first ones I could find at 950/1200. Now it shows MSI in GPU-z lol.

Reviews on newegg show people are not getting ref cards (Diamond). They get the same cards as power color by the looks of photos I have seen.
