Is the Vanguard VT-520 quick release any good of a tripod? My dad gave me his, its some 15 or so years old, but I still use it for everything. :S

I'm not sure of the exact specs of that tripod (too old find out), but if it's anything like other Vanguard tripods I have encountered, I would definitely pass on it. Granted, it will work with lighter gear and infrequent use, but I wouldn't trust it personally. I had a Vanguard a while ago, and the QR plate wouldn't tighten securely into the tripod socket, so it ended up twisting and becoming loose, and scratching a circle into the bottom of camera.

Sorry but what exactly do you mean that the QR plat twisted in the socket?

The QR plate is a rectangle, i'm unsure how it could spin. Maybe I'm just not understanding something...

I talked to my dad about it, he says he got it 10 years ago when he was into photography, and that he payed $350 for it. :/

As I said, I don't know the specs on your tripod. It could be a fairly decent one for all I know, but I haven't actually used a quality Vanguard before. But, even Promaster makes some decent tripods I must admit.

The quick release plate has a 3/8" screw protruding from it which goes into the tripod socket of most any camera. Typically, there's a small metal loop on the bottom of the plate to screw it in. The Vanguard I had would come loose even if tightened quite a bit.

This is the screw I'm referring to:

not a good tripod......i wouldnt use it for anything other then say a flash or a PS.

but there is a QR plate on it, looks like theres a lever on it to release the QR plate.

edit ah i reread the thread....and gone is taking about how the screw on the QR plate can come lose and end up spinning around.

But that's with a point and shoot tongue.gif Mount a DSLR on there and you'll have an entirely different result.

Personally I'm using a $19 blacks's "fidelity" tripod (just like those generic tripods). it's fine as I use a cheap remote ($3) to trigger my camera.

Most likely yours is fine, as long as it keeps your camera still and stable.

Yep that looks a lot like the one I used to have, geared center column, large panning handle. I see that you're using a point-and-shoot with it, for which it's perfectly suited. My bad experience was from using it with a DSLR, specifically a Canon XTi.

Yeah, I am using a P&S. tongue.gif A crappy one at that.

It's not changing any time soon either, I'm broke twice over.
As long as I can rely on the thing for simple tasks like this. smile.gif

Thanks
