Noctua NH C14 vs D14 - Page 2

There is no contest between the two. You have room for the D14. Get that.

Is it a good idea to invest on a third fan on the cooler?

I'm finding that a third fan generally does not add much. But I'm just starting the formal testing. I'll know more in a few months.

What's in the picture is a Noctua NF-D14 flanked by two Gentle Typhoon AP-14's. ATM I'm running this cooler on my basement testbed with a Thermalright TY-140 and a Gentle Typhoon AP-14 or two. When I am satisfied with the stability and repeatability of my runs I'll begin formal testing.

So far, the TY-140 and AP-14 gets me 22.5 dB and about the same cooling as the TY-140 and two AP-14's. But the 3-fan setup was 24 dB. A stock set of Noctua NF-P12 and NF-P14 makes about 27.5 dB noise.

Alright thanks for the info I don't think I'm going to buy another fan for it. Also why do people hate computer fan noise so much? I honestly never understood that, I have seen most people would sacrifice performance just to have a quieter system.

It's not really the noise, but the quality of the noise. My case fans make noise, but it is all a gentle moving air sound. Many fans hum or make various tones. That is annoying.

Ah I see your point, I have a NYKO intercooler for my Xbox 360 and it sometimes makes this odd squealing(?) noise when it first starts up but I can tolerate that as it eventually goes away.
EDIT:
Oh and I wanted to ask how can I test my CPU cooler fans to ensure that they're blowing in the direction I want them to?

Fans pretty much all blow over the struts. Arctic Cooling has a few cage fans that don't, but the rest all blow over the struts.

Actually, a 12v battery would do for testing. Or a spare psu with a paper clip mod. Then you could test your fans out in the open.

frostytech rated the c-14 better:
http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm
I also had to choose between these 2, i`m so happy that i took the c-14,
you wouldn`t belive how small an antec_300 is
I also like the top-down design, so i get some extra air on my mobo.
But i think if space isn`t a problem for you, both are a VERY good choice!
I you get the C-14 we should open the C-14 owner/fan_club, it`s seems that only few here have one...
