Canon makes all major components of there camera's, they make their own imagers, they make their image processing chips (digic series), they manufactuer 100% of their lenses, they perform all design and manufactur of their DSLR gear.

Nikon on the other hand outsources pretty much everything in there bodies except for image processing. Nikon now uses Sony imagers, they do still make 100% of their lense's.

Thanks ill check it out

originally I was looking at mostly nikon, it doesnt matter to me if its nikon or canon, but im looking at the rebel series because of the price. If I can get a similar nikon outfit around the same price range then that would be great.

canon does not make the sensors on some of their point and shoots cameras (g11/s90 uses sony ICX685CQZ sensors). so it isnt 100%

but i know what you are talking about, i made a comment like that in the camera thread about nikonians.....it didnt go well

anyways back on topic....

the nikon d3100 is a very very good camera. its a bit more expensive then the xsi but it uses a newer sensor which has less noise and also video.

If you want to remain budget minded, Id pay a little more for the Nikon now and then start hunting for old lenses that are in good/ excellent condition. You will have SOOOOOOO many cheap, excellent options going that route.

With Canon, its not as flexible. But what will you be shooting?
