£100 Headphones

£100 =~ $160 (Just though I'd save time for the Americans on the site ^^).

I'm looking for a decent set of headphones for around this budget. I've tried on the Sennheiser HD555 instore and they were fantastic! Unfortunately they have stopped making them and there are none in stock anywhere (unless I want to pay a silly amount of money for them).

Then news comes out that the Sennheiser HD558s have came out, again using the same design that I found comfortable in the 555s, but in plain black - looks nice Unfortunately again they are out of stock in most online retailers and the ones which are instock are £150+ :O

I did however find one retailer that charged £130 + £5.99 P&P - but this is slightly over my budget. Is it worth me getting these for £130 or is this too much for them (and if so could you suggest a good alternative that's of ~~ the same sound quality and is comfortable (nice padding) and possibly a bit closer to the £100?

Thanks so much for anyone brave enough for reading all this

if you are spending £100 on heasphones, you must be serious about sound.

just save up £40 more and go for it ! , I am sure you wont regret it afterwards

Hmm... you're the second person who thinks it's rather a lot of money. Don't get me wrong I loved the 555s I tried because they sounded fantastic and were really comfortable on my head (infact when I got back and put on my Sony MDR-XD100s they felt like some kind of cage!).

I've also heard I'll need a headphone amplifier to get the most out of them (so in my case a sound card for my PC). I've heard good things about the Xonar DG (and it helps that it's only £20) but will this really improve the sound quality much more over (i)Motherboard 5.1 sound - Gigabyte MA785GMTUD2H (ii)The HDMI HD audio from my GTX460?

Sorry for all the questions

Sorry for digging this up after nearly a week but I've finally got the sound card and the HD558s. Money well spent!

I've tried the cans with the mobos sound and it really doesn't do it justice. The sound card just takes the nectar and adds extra sugar to it !
