You cant go wrong with a 890gx in the $130 range and then a quad core phenom ii for $125 - 150 depending on the model...

Throw in a 5870 for around $220 (seen deals on newegg)

Then add ram and hard drives.

That chip is a PhenomII 940, which is AM2 only, which limits you to AM2 or AM2+ boards and DDR2 memory, and it's an older stepping which isn't such a great one for clocking as the newer C3 stepping chips. Still not bad tho, my best mate has one at 3.5Ghz on air.

With the current price of DDR2, if you don't have some around you can use, then go for an AM3 chip and board, and DDR3 memory.

Nice thanks everyone for the clarification. Any recommendations for a motherboard? I kind of want USB 3.0 even though its useless atm.

Oh I didn't realize I'd be limited to DDR2. I do have the 4 gigs in my sig rig but I did want to make the jump to DDR3. Looks like I need an AM3 mobo then.

Very close, but I have a X2 255(AM2+) in a AM2 board which once had a 4600+ in it, all that was needed was a Bios update.

AMD confirmed that AM2 processors will work on AM2+ motherboards and AM2+ processors will work on AM2 motherboards. However, the operation of AM2+ processors on AM2 motherboards will be limited to the specifications of Socket AM2 (1 GHz HyperTransport 2.0, and one power plane for both cores and the IMC). AM2 processors do not benefit from the faster HyperTransport 3.0 and separate power planes on AM2+ motherboards.

Many manufacturers, such as Dell in the case of their Inspiron 531, have yet to (and may choose not to) release BIOS updates that would enable this compatibility. As a result, some consumers are unable to upgrade their PCs with AM2+ CPUs despite this being technically possible, and are instead forced to buy a new motherboard to upgrade the processor. MSI has simply stated that their AM2 motherboards are not compatible with AM2+ processors.

AMD confirmed that there is an upgrade path from Socket AM2+ to AM3:

* AM3 processors work on AM2+ motherboards due to the presence of both the DDR2 and DDR3 memory controller
* AM2+ processors do not work on AM3 motherboards due to the processor's lack of a DDR3 memory controller.

Thats how it goes.
