Mouse Freezes During Gaming

Hey guys,

I have a really weird issue that I'd like to see if anyone has an answer for. I purchased the entire rig that is listed in my signature all at once, assembled it and have been using it for about three months. Then one night I was playing EVE Online and mouse started hanging up.

When I say hanging up, it was doing this weird thing where the mouse would freeze my entire system up for 10 seconds every time I tried to move it. As soon as this started happening, I could still completely control my computer with my keyboard, but if I touch the mouse then I get another 10 second system freeze.

I've done so many different things to try to resolve this issue that I'm completely exhausted and wondering where to go next.

Here's what I've tried so far:

- Uninstalled and reinstalled the original mouse drivers
- Swapped USB ports
- Changed to a wireless mouse and installed those drivers
- Set power options to high performance
- Went into power options and disabled USB selective suspend
- Disabled hard disk power off
- Pulled all hardware out of my computer and reseated it after dusting it off
- Bought a completely new mouse and changed drivers (three mice same problem)
- Installed most recent video card drivers
- Rolled back to one previous video card driver
- Rolled back to two previous video card drivers
- Pulled both video cards out and played games with only one card
- Swapped video cards (That chances that BOTH cards are faulty is pretty dang low)
- Updated every single driver for every single piece of equipment in device manager
- Used Afterburner to underclock my video cards
- Raised IOH voltage (this seemed to work for a while, crashes were farther apart like this at least)
- Raised voltage of the card with Afterburner
- Ran Memtest for an entire night with no errors
- Ran Prime95 for six hours with no instability
- Ran 3Dmark Vantage for four hours with no crashing or mouse hang ups
- Reinstalled Windows 7
- Secure Erased the SSD and did a fresh install of Windows
- Performed all of the SSD tweaks listed on the OCZ site
- Unplugged all USB devices except mouse and keyboard
- Tested power output of of PSU with ASUS Rampage III Formula test points on mobo
- Used realtemp to closely monitor CPU and other temps

None of this at all works. It's completely random too. Sometimes I'll play a game for ten seconds and mouse starts hanging up and sometimes I'll play a game for three hours before it hangs up. I'm losing my mind here. sad-smiley-002.gif

Will it freeze in safemode?
N/M only while gaming, correct?

Might be the controller going bad.
Have you tried a ps2 mouse?

It only happens when gaming and I'm pretty sure I can't launch any of the games I play if the video drivers don't load, but then again, I'm a noob at these sort of things.

sounds like a unstable overclock if the video drivers crash

I wanted to try a PS2 mouse, but unfortunately the Rampage III Formula only has one PS2 port and it's labeled for keyboards. Believe me, I would love for this to fix the issue at this point, so if there's a way to use my mouse in that port, then please please show me how! I couldn't get it to recognize my mouse tho. frown.gif

Also, as for overclocking, one of the things I listed on my list of things I tried was to set all the clocks on my video cards back to reference standards. This did allow me to play for longer before lockups, but they still happened.

Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention. It only happens while ONLINE gaming too. I can play Crysis Warhead for hours with no problems, but if I play EVE Online or Perpetuum, then I get these crashes.

Also, until I disabled HT and Speedstep, I had DPC latency that was off the charts, and it's still sitting at the max of the "safe" limits... if that might have anything to do with all of this.

You've tried with vsyc en/disabled?

Yes sir and it happens faster with it disabled.. on top of making my video cards sound like harriers taking off.

Could it in any way be related to my monitor? For some reason I noticed today that my HF229 HANNspree monitor tops out at a refresh rate of 59Hz. Could this low refresh rate conflict with some games in some way?

My system doesn't recognize the mouse when I used the USB/PS2 adapter.

Could be that all three mice I own aren't compatible with PS2 signals, but I tried rebooting with all three of them plugged into that port and none of them would be recognized.

Logitech MR1000
Logitech G9x
Cyborg R.A.T. 7

EDIT: Ok, I dug around in my closet and found an ancient piece of **** microsoft optical mouse that I didn't even know I still owned. The PS2 port recognized it and I'm trying it now.

Assuming this fixes the issue... what exactly will this point to as being the issue? IRQ conflict with my USB mice..?

Well, two hours of gaming and not a single mouse hang up.

So what now? I really don't want to control $2500 USD worth of high tech gaming rig through a PS2 mouse that I could pick up at a yard sale for 50 cents. There's no way in hell I could be competitive in my FPS matches with this thing. laugher.gif

Am I looking at some sort of IRQ conflict? I thought Winblows 7 was supposed to have negated IRQ conflicts through its superior coding, but that's the only thing I can think of.. and I have no clue how to resolve it even if that's the issue.
