I'm slightly concerned... - Page 2

Thread Starter
I suppose I should mention that I got this board in a bundle with the processor itself... I think I'll take a trip on down to the NCIX forums and give them a heads up.

I have also heard these stories but have been running a phenom II x2 555 unlocked to 3 cores (4th is unstable) at 3.820ghz / 1.48v just fine for a while on a msi 870a-g54. Ran a successful stress test with no errors for 24 hours

Mosfets seem fine, no sparks or any horror stories to report.

I have found MSI to be a good company, and in fact have only had problems with ASUS mobos.

Oh no, NCIX... why have you paired that CPU with that board and brought inevitable disasters to your customers, oh no saddest thing is that's the main place I shop

Your CPU + that board would probably be fine at stock and with the stock cooler (since the board is rated by MSI for up to 125W anyway), but with anything deviating from stock or even a slight overclock, you're on your own. Note that even Phenom II x4s (also 125W, but still usually not as heavy on the VRMs) can blow on MSI 4+1 boards - at stock. Has happened two times to an OCN member already.

Today i just got a new horror story: 3 890GXM-G65 in a row failing with overclocked x6 (890GX version of that mobo, same everything else including the 4+1 heatsinked mosfets). That's right, 4+1 mosfets that are HEATSINKED, failing every single time. The guy RMA'd 3 times, and every time afterwards the board still blew.

Let this be a warning for you and a message to you that you should be getting that new motherboard.

superste2201: Do not run more than 1.4V on that board with a processor that has 95-125W stock TDP (unlocked x2 counts as 125W). 4Ghz x4s have blown or caused sparks on that board easily. Actually you shouldn't be overclocking at all. Even if your mosfets don't blow right away, they can still do so over time (i.e. after some months).
