PSU Dead? or Mobo? or?

G'day folks

Just got home from work, went to throw my little HTPC on.....nothing, no power at all when you hit the button, completely dead, no fans/hdd spinup/etc, just dead

Of course first thing i did was change switches (i only had a "momentary" switch like the reset switch hangin around, im not sure if they can work as power switches?, or are all the switches the same), that didn't work, still dead

So i pulled the 24 pin connector out, jumped the Green to a black, hit the power switch on the PSU and magically, everything turned on, HDD's powered up, fans spun, it all worked, so i plugged it back in, still dead....

So i decided to leave the green>black jumper wire in the back of the plug and plug it into the mobo, did that, turned the psu switch on, everything comes on, CPU/GPU fans all work, ram lights come on (i have ballistix tracers), hdd's spin up, DVD drive works, but i hear really short "blips" coming from the speak, over and over, the sounds like half the length of your typical "Beep" sound, just a little "blip", over and over about a second apart.

I then pulled the ram from the machine, powered back on, and i get 'No Ram" error beeps from the mobo, same with video card, which to me indicates that the CPU and suchs is all in working order, if something was completely dead wouldn't it just not do anything?

So in short >
  • No power with case switch
  • PSU powers on with jumper wire Green>Black
  • Mobo powers on using the Green>Black jumper
  • Mobo continously emits small sharp "blip" sound from speaker
  • Mobo responds to not having Ram/Gfx card installed with proper error beep codes

What could be the issue here? No idea what the "blip" sound indicates as its not even listed as a valid beep code.

ps, the rig in question is in my sig

Cheers for any help you guys can give me

um, yes i said in the post i switched it with another button, also tried the reset switch another switch which was the "intruder" switch from a TT Soprano case

Just an update, while i posted that i left it off/unplugged, just plugged it back in, still no power with any switches but i jumped it, and it powered on and POST'ed, its not in XMBC playing 720P video with no issues,

i might break out my multimeter and see if the switches ive tried are working, but could it be something wrong with the switch circuitry on the board?

so i stripped the computer out of the case and set it up on the table then stripped down another PC for its PSU, hooked it up with the old PSU, switch don't work/just makes "blipping" sound, hooked up the other PSU, powered straight on, so looks like its a PSU

So diappointing when a relatively good PSU dies
Anyhow, not much i can do about it, so what sort of wattage should i get to replace it (powering sig rig), i can get a Corsair VX450 for $88, but i intend on adding more HDD's so perhaps i should get a larger one?

ps, im quite pissed this didn't happen like 2 weeks ago, at which point i would have upgraded my TX750 in my main PC, to a modular Corsair PSU @ around or above the same wattage and switched the 750 into the NAS, but now i have custom single sleeving on the TX750 so thats off the table as an option
