Core i7 920 @ 3.2GHz with Turbo mode?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone I just overclocked my Core i7 920 to 3.2GHz and it's running well the only thing I have noticed is it doesn't seem to ever go into turbo mode. I have the CPU multiplier set to 20 and the BCLK set to 160 also the ram is at 1604MHz and the QPI seems to be a weird sounding 5.760MHz (2880MHz x2.) When i load the CPU it doesn't go to into turbo CPU multiplier 21. I have turbo mode enabled in bios so I'm not sure whats going on but with such a light overclock I'd still like to have turbo mode work. Also is there a way to get my QPI back to 6.4GT/s without increasing the BCLK?

One other problem I am having (idk if anyone here can help.) is I have 3x 2gb (6gb) of ram but sometimes when I turn on my system it says 4gb so I have to turn it off and then back on. I'm not sure what is wrong since it doesn't always do it.

I was also wondering why the core temps are hotter then the actual cpu temp.

Do you have your "CPU ratio" set to auto or to 21? If you have it auto it may not hit the 21 even if Turbo is enabled. If you are concerned about speedstep still working it will, even with the 21 multi entered into the bios.

I actually figured out what was wrong with turbomode I had the cpu ratio set to 20 so it was only going to 20 max I set it to auto and now it goes to 21 when it needs it smile.gif I am still having the ram trouble and i'd like to get the qpi back to 6.4 but I don't think I can change the qpi without changing the base clock which would change my ram too. I could change my qpi to 7000 but I didn't want to over clock it. I can get the qpi to 6.4 if i up the bclk more but then my ram is either under 1200 or over 1600 which I don't want.

PS: when I had my cpu voltage on auto it was giving it 1.24v so I manually put in 1.1 and now cpu-z says it's 1.088v so that's better not that I had any problems with it higher. Do you think I could step the voltage down even more for a 3.2ghz clock? at stock clock it was only using like .84v

Glad I could help

First go ahead and enable LLC or load line calibration, that will help get you more consistant voltages.

Check out the guide in my signature, that has a pretty good step by step way of doing it and also helps you understand in the interactions between the different settings.

My auto vcore was also 1.24 which I found I could stretch all the way up to 3.8 with some other adjustments. I also ran 3.6ghz at 1.088 vcore for a time. See what performance you want and then you can decide what speed to settle on and then tweak the voltages accordingly.

Do you have everything else on auto?

BCLK: 160
DDR3 1604mhz
DRAM Bus voltage: 1.64v
QPI/DRAM Core voltage: 1.30v

The rest is all on auto except my ram timings which i had to manually do because ocz sets it to 1066mhz even tho it's really 1600mhz. I don't think my bios has a LLC option.

LLC on my Asus board is located on the third page, the one after the CPU ratio etc, towards the bottom where CIE and speedstep settings are located.

Check there.

What speed do you want? or are you jsut just looking for the best OC you can get?

Also what are your temps like under Intel Burn Test?

The page after Ai Tweaker is Advanced and I don't see LLC on there. My temps at full load are cpu 41-42c, the cores go to like 51c not sure if they count in speedfan or just the cpu temp does. I'm not looking to oc that much since nothing really needs it but 3.4ghz would be a nice round number although if I go to that I can't get the 1600mhz for my ram so 3.2 is fine for now. I might need to reseat my cpu or adjust teh tension on the cooler from what I read that can cause the ram to show up weird sometimes. once and a while i turn the comp on and its 4gb have to turn it off and on again to get it back to 6gb sometimes.

Stock QPI speed for a 920 is 4.8, not 6.4. Also, QPI speed is largely irrelevant as all it does on a single socket LGA-1366 chip is connect the CPU to the chipset, and even the stock 4.8GT/s is far more than enough for it not to be a bottleneck.

True stock is 4.8 but they unlocked it so you can still get the 6.4 but ok yea doesn't sound like it will make any difference. Now my only problem is my ram issue. In speedfan are the core temps really more then the cpu temp in general is?
