I need your superior intellect to answer my question.

Ok so i have recently been experiencing problems with my Hp dv6 laptop. The problem starts when I start playing Cod4 or any game from anywhere to 2 to15 min of gaming. The laptop just randomly freezes. At first I thought it might be due to overheating, but I cleaned out the vents and the fan.The graphics chip and cpu both share the same cooling fan.I also replaced the thermal paste with Arctic 5 Silver for both the cpu and gpu.I never had this problem when I bought the laptop in July 09.

One thing though I am able to play Starcraft 2 for extended periods and no freezing ,but only when it is at lowest settings,as soon as I start to put high textures and such the laptop freezes and also I lose internet connection right before it freezes.I have also run cpu burn test to full load while at the same time running a gpu benchmark and no freezing whatsoever.I was sure it would freeze because of heat ,but to my surprise it did not.Only while gaming at higher settings and sometimes even at low.I have ran memory test as well and did a clean install of windows.

The laptop never freezes when browsing the web or watching movies only gaming

What can be the problem?

So please I beg of you,HELP me please.I want to play COD4 -_-

Here are my specs:
Hp dv6
Os:Windows 7 originaly Windows Vista.
CPU:Amd turionx2 ultra @2.2ghz idle temps@63c-65c
Ram:4gb
Gpu:Ati mobility radeon 4650 @550/667 idle Temps@60c
Ati catalyst 10.12
Updated bios.
Removed Ram and did memtest.

Shuts down when F@H.

If I manually adjust Cpu usage to 80% the laptop does not freeze.
Sometimes WLAN gets cut off also when cpu is at 100% usage.

What could be the problem?

Sounds to me like a problem you get when overclocking a gpu, because its when the gpu is stressed and goes for more then it can handle and blacks out. Also try backing off of 10.12, i have a friend with a Dell 16in Studio XPS laptop with a 4670 in it and when he tried using 10.12 his computer totally freaked out. Are you using programs such as MSI Afterburner to overclock your gpu? if you are back down the clocks a bit because I had a similar problem when trying to overclock a friends HP laptop that had an Nvidia GT330m in it and when we went up too high, it would freak out when he tried to play a game. It has to do with the amount of power being given to the gpu and it exceeding its resource limits.

Try using CPU-Z to see what temps ur getting just to double check its not overheating.

Hope this helped!

It doesn't look like it's overclocked
but in any case it is... better set them stock :/

Come back with results if you have overclocked.. downclock it

Thanks for the advice, although I have tried rolling back drivers to all the way back to 9.11 and still no good. When monitoring my temps it stays at 40c-55c for the Cpu and the gpu 55c-60c.

Someone mentioned that it might be related to my heat sensor prematurely shutting down my CPU due to faulty hardware, if that is indeed the problem is there any way of replacing it?Or could it be something else?

Actually that quite possibly could be the problem, whenever you try and play a game or watch a movie the temps are going to go up and when your computer sees 60 celcius on the cpu it may be thinking 115 celcius. Have you ever overheated? slid it under your bed sheets while it was running a benchmark perhaps?

Ok to be more specific I use Powerplay to adjust my Cpu usage if I leave it to 100%(default settings)the laptop shuts down.I have underclocked my gpu to be sure it's not my temps, but it still happens.

Now if I set it to 85% processor usage and Overclock my gpu it does not freeze whatsoever when gaming or web browsing etc..the problem is the performance takes a big hit as well.

BTW I was reading up on the mobility 4650 and it says the stock clocks are 550mhz core and 800mhz mem, seems like your memory is quite a bit down clocked from what the stock clocks are

My friend has this laptop and I'm quite taken back that you're trying to run COD4 on it. It's not a gaming device Seems like it's crashing because it can't handle the pressure.
