My laptop works just not like it should. On day one of purchase I was able to run Cod4 maxed at 1366x768 and quite a few other games.,but as I've stated before I am no longer able to do that and my performance is nowhere near how it used to be.
The sensor is on the GPU/chip. I've PM'd you, btw. Which explains everything. The short circuiting theroy is convoluted and sounds extremely implausible to me.

Seems like your GPU is overheating and being throttled, then. I would recommend disaasembling it and replacing the thermal paste and giving it a good clean out. How old is it/how long have you had it?

Dude did you not even read what his initial question stated? He said he has already cleaned out the fans and heat sinks AND replaced the thermal compound on both the cpu and gpu

Have a crack at both of these. You say it only seems to freeze when you run using high textures, so perhaps it could be GPU memory?

Ok I'm going to try them out right now and see what happens.

Ok so when runnng Intel Cpu Burn and also running Furmark it does not have any problems with heat or freezing when running at 100%,but as soon as I load up a game and I mean any game e.g. Torchlight it freezes 5 minutes into playing it.

Also just to be clear there is absolutely no freezing whatsoever when CPU is set at 85% usage.freezing only occurs when I set it to 100%.So could it be a cpu related problem.

Edit: ran both programs and had no errors at all.

No time here to read all 3 pages of the thread, but i try to help.
I'm not that good @ laptops but i think i'm good @ temps problems..
Try installing everest, go into burn test but do not start it, just go
into statistic page and leave it open with sensor page temps opened too.
It can be a NB problem. In this case your CPU and GPU new paste obviously
are not taken into consideration. NB can shut down and freeze your PC as CPU
or GPU when overheating, also SB can do that, but i repeat, i dunno how your
laptop is made, so this are just tips. (maybe no NB? @.@)
Everest will give you NB & SB temps, but at 90% the problem is NB between the 2.
I hope your laptop can read those temps and got sensors for them.
Second thing, try 10.10, i know is one of the most stable drivers update
we got lastly from ATI.
Anyway i would consider switching your laptop to default values.
Your idle temps seems crazy to me, you could also try this if possible:
go and play your game at full resolution in a cold place, any place that you
know is colder than where you play usually, and see the result., calculating
the time it takes to freeze, if it will do that.
Doing this, you'll know if the problem are temps or something else.
Good luck mate

PS: NB overheat not necessarily when CPU or GPU are up to 100%, instead when usually
both of them and other things are working a lot together.
Btw, if temps aren't the problems, maybe your laptop PSU is.

Hmm, did you run the memtestCL (not the Nvidia one?) also don't forget they're based on memorytest86+ so you might want to leave them for 30mins or so to run a couple of passes. That said, I haven';t used either so I don't know what the GUI is like or anything so I'm going in blind on that one.

LOL ok I figured it was done within the first pass,I'll just leave it on for a while.

turn the power settings to high performance?

LOL, I wish it was that easy. The thing is that when it's at High Performance the cpu utilization it set at 100% causing freezing when gaming. It's really complicated to explain. The synthetic benchmarks although cpu intensive, does not cause any freezing problems.
I was thinking it was a CPU issue because when I set it to 85% when gaming no freezing occurs, but then when I set it to 100% and do a CPU burn test no freezing occurs either. So I'm stumped as to what might be the problem.
