[GND] GTX 590 in February - Page 8

How is it that the 2gb Cayman pretty much flounders at lower resolutions single card against Fermi.
Then once multiple cards/monitors are introduced that performance gap narrows considerably and on occasion becomes a slight advantage.

And if I recall correctly the the 5970 really walks the 480 at 1200 and 1600p.
Exactly my point sir. 5970s have more ROP power than a GTX 480 but have less VRAM. It still beats it at 1600P and EF/Surround. Conclusion, VRAM has to be paired with high geometry throughput. Aside from storing the threads in the VRAM, the ROPs and schedulers inside the GPU have to do something usefull with those threads.

And my thoughts about Cayman catching up with GF110 at higher res is that they simply both start to fail. If you'd run all of those cards @ 32xAA (I know Cayman can't do that but just speaking theoretically) @ 7680x1600 AF 16x and all that good stuff. Both could be around 3 FPS or 4 FPS giving the 6970 a 33% lead!

In reality I see the GTX 580 remaining about 15% faster overall at consistent results.

Perfect example in this bench:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/H...D_6970/18.html

Notice how the GTX 470 is around 26% slower than the 6970 at 1680x1050 and how the GTX 470 'catches up' at 2560x1600 to 17%. Is that because the 470 has more VRAM or geometry performance? No, they simply both fail and give out strange results. I don't know which review you mean, but I'd like a link to see what's exactly the case.

Why I keep saying this, AMD hasn't changed the ROP structure since the 2900 it's hard to say otherwise if something remains the same (note: I do know the ROPs itself have changed internally in this chip). A GTX 480 will also remains power hungry just as leaves will keep falling of the trees in autumn.

Nvidia has plans to release a dual gpu to compete with AMD's Antilles 6990.
That's why. Plans does in no way mean that it will be released. Ever hear of crazy plans being cancelled before? I know I have.

I'm pretty sure there WILL be a 590, will it be 2 580 chips? I would be impressed if that's the case, but 2 560 chips would be more likely.

Besides EVGA already has a sample DUAL GPU card:

Although we couldn't tease too many details from the reps on hand, we know it'll be based on two GF104 chips, carry 2GB of memory, support three-screen surround gaming out of the box, all the while costing less than a GTX 580.

There's no way Nvidia is going to let the 6990 have the fastest card title, at least, not at the rate their going right now.

Right now, AMD is 2nd best to Nvidia's offerings, but of course, AMD prices their stuff according to their performance.

Remember this, this, this or this?

None ever happened. This sort of thing often happens a PCB made, a cooler made, never sold.

If they sold a dual 560 card, it would be pointless. It probably wouldn't perform any better than a 580 while using more power and creating more heat.

ATi still currently have to most powerful graphics card around, the 5970, shown here:

SLi 560's are only just faster, shown here:

So if they are only just faster, the 6990 should considerably faster than SLi 560's.

Further proof of this is that SLi 560's only get 6% faster than the 5970 and crossfire 6870's are 9% faster, shown here:

So if crossfire 6870's are faster than SLi 560's, the 6990 (dual 6970 or 6950's) should be well ahead.

Since everything right now is a rumor and unconfirmed, it's hard to say what chips will be in the 590, if it does in fact get released.

I am only speculating that it would be 560 chips, just saying that's what would make the most sense.

According to these 560 SLI benchmarks, the 5970 & 560's SLI are not really that close
http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforc...i-sli-review/5

Look at ALL gaming benchies such as:

What if ( and it's a big what if ) the dual GPU turns out to have 2 580 chips?
http://www.nordichardware.com/news/7...ual-gf110.html

There's no way AMD will be able to compete with that, since the 6970 gets spanked by the 580 right now.
