Looking for a firewall/router distro w/ filesharing and captive portal

Thread Starter
Hi guys

I'm looking for a good FREE distro for my next PC based router build requirement..

basically all i want are:

1) a decent firewall
2) good Gateway performance for 10mbps internet line
3) DUAL WAN support
4) Basic captive portal w/ usermanagement and bandwidth restriction per user
- i basically want all users full bandwidth priviledges, and 1 guest account w/ half bandwidth speed

5) FILE SHARING , coz i'll be using 250GB HDD's for the router box, i would atleast want to use that extra space for SIMPLE file sharing and storage..

I am running PFSense now, and it falls short of what i want/need..

i'm actually looking to try ClearOS and Zentyal tomorrow as they are the top 2 i found that may have what i need.. but heck maybe you guys know better?!

So please do make suggestions.

THANKS!!

well ive done intestive testing w/ PFSense and ClearOS already, i have to say clearOS is far superior than PFSense in features and usefulness at the cost of heavier hardware requirement.... odly though there are some things one would expect in a feature pack ClearOS but they're not there, and sadly no Captive Portal built in and no other built in work arounds for this except
1) using proxy cache to create user access w/c means you need control over the clients to set proxy servers etc...
2) install captive portal package separately

im on Atom Single core , 2GB DDR2 and 80GBHDD

PFsense was super stable , super fast.. while COS was at times less responsive.. i would like on 1 item in the webGui and clicking on aother item I sometimes need to wait 2-3 seconds, sometimes it's instant and sometimes it takes even longer.. so it's strange.. kinda miss the snappyness of PFsense or even my home routers

I also noticed better bandwidth shaping features on PFsense.. easier too.. and the options are clear and laid out easily and in places one would expect.. w/ clearOS i had to do some looking around and figuring out. where as in PFsense i almost instantly knowwhere to go or what something is for.. in ClearOS i had to keep looking at the docs even for the basic features like WAN Setup and stuff..

But w/ clearOS on the otherhand it's uber useful w/ its built in file server, apache and mysql.. i can think of many uses for that alone.. then it has built in Squid cache (but it's an easily installable package in PfSense).. there are lots of other goodies in ClearOS unfortunately it false short of what would be most useful for regular users... so i guess that's what separates clearOS and PFsense

Where PFsense is clearly a straight forward router/firewall system w/ a bonus for captive portal .. but besides the captive portal i personally cant find any reason to use it over my other routers... sure the bandwidth shaping is cool but i can do similar stuff w/ standard routers.. and sure there are better logging engines in pfsense, but im the kind of guy who doesnt have time to stare at the logs.. the standard system and connectivity logs in routers are fine w/ me..

I dont mean to downplay PFSense it's solid.. and it has more features than regular routers for sure, but if you dont have use for them I think you'd rather be better off w/ simple easy to use and low power consuming home routers..

but for businesses, internet cafes, and similar stuff, yes PFsense does have a place for it..

or again if you have specific use for Captive Portal..

but to be honest, if you're gona setup a computer based router for businesses, then might as well go for clearOS... as it has a handful of usefulness, specially being able to use the extra drive space on the system as network share via SAMBA... and it's pretty easy to setup... the Squid Cache too... etc..

I like ClearOs.. but i just cant help feeling it lacks things, and it's a bit harder to understand at first.. but despite all that it's pretty awesome..

Now time to try Zentyal....... will post back.
