[Resolved] Which gigabit switches to get (ordered) - Page 2

I have a similar setup but mine involves 3 routers and 2 switches. I have had the TRENDnet TEG-S80G for over a year now, and it has been great no issues what so ever. It does run fairly cool compared to the other switches, but then again it sits in the basement on a self with my main router and server. I would recommend the TRENDnet TEG-S80G over the netgear unless its the prosafe series.

Just 1 floor. I have the 2nd switch (where the 8 port will go) in a hallway closet about 50 feet from the router (which is where cable comes into the house).

and as for the wireless router used as a switch staying 10/100, I don't need GB there, since it is only a folding rig/test area. Right nwo the cable is not even being used (looking to build another folding rig).

Thanks, the Netgear I am thinking about is the prosafe series.

As far as choosing the hardware is concerned, I vouch for the Netgear GS105 and GS108. I actually use a GS108T as well but that's probably of no use to you.
I've used NetGear's ProSafe products for a long time and like their reliability and sturdiness. The only thing I don't like about them is that the ports are on the front and the power input is on the back. I'd rather everything was on the back since I set mine on a desk, and it makes for a small mess of wires since I route the cables behind the desk anyway.

Um are your switches both plugged into the router, and plugged into each other? That might cause some problems.

Gotcha. So, if you're cool with running wire between the switches, and its not a PITA, you're good. If its a PITA, the just upgrade the router. Some guys don't know what it takes to run wire in a house, the right way. Under carpets or held in place with ducttape just aint the way to do it. It takes alot of time, and is always best with ethernet wall plates.

trueg50, no the corrected diagram is modem -> router -> 5 port switch -> 8 port switch with all computers plugged into the 5 or 8 port switches.

Rayzer- yea, I have my wires running in my attic (except my bedroom HTPC). I need to get some more cable to do a drop, it is under the carpet for right now . I also need to do a drop for my wifes, since hers and the HTPC are currently on a switch that I want to take out of the loop.

Lol, i'm cool with wire cable tacked under the molding, which would be under the carpet also. Wire under the middle of a carpet is a no-no. Good luck buddy, and if you're gonna do this, are you gonna upgrade the whole house to cat6? or are you already there?

FYI My server and my htpc have 2 switches and a router between them. All gigabit with cat6. I get an average of 100mBps, low as 80 and as high as 120. Blu ray rips played across the network are flawless.

Yea, I have never heard anything bad about the Prosafe stuff. It is odd they have the plug on one side and the ports on the other, but not really an issue for me, since the 8 port is up ion a closet and the 5 port will probably be sitting under the desk on top of the server.

...
I have cat 5e right now (got 500 feet for free). I will be buying some cat 6 to do the 2 drops I need and depending on speeds, may replace the current cat 5e.

The current cable for the bedroom HTPC is along the wall under the carpet, so that is why I have not been in a hurry to replace it. Not ideal, but works. I already have a hole to drop the cable for it (have an antenna and phone cable running down that wall) just need to get the cable and do it.

Still not sure which switches to get though. Netgear is what I am leaning to, but the trendnet price is more to my liking, but I have no personal experience.

Unfortunately, i'll have to stop there. The only unmanaged switches i have had experience with are these cheap netgears i linked to. But i'll tell ya, none have failed so far.
Good luck. I subbed, so there better be pictures in the future
