p67 board with room for 2 three slot graphics cards and sound card?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to upgrade my system from an 8400 to the new sandy bridge but looking through some of the current boards the layout of most x16 pci-e slots doesn't look good for what I want to do.
I want to SLI and attach the thermalright shaman (I am particular to noise) to some 580s but most cards seem to have stupid placements of the x16 pci-e slots so that it'd block all pci ports.
I have a asus ST essence that i'd also like to have in the system.
Does anyone know of a board that has say an x16 slot up top and then one at the bottom so there's room for a pci card still?

The UD7 board or the WS or Maximus will do. Google their names for pics of the expansion slot layout.

But you might as well wait for GTX 590.

I'm not up on my pci-e specs so have current video cards even come close to hitting the x8 bus limit? On that UD7 board the top x16 only leaves 2 slots of room between it and the second one.
I probably won't actually be setting up SLI i just want to have it as an option. I will however have at least one graphics card with a 3 slot gpu cooler.

8x is plenty of bandwidth for current cards.

In terms of spacing for airflow, its a bit of an issue with most board layouts.

Dude, why get the shaman? It is the biggest waste of space in the history of pcs. Just get yourself either an msi twin frozr or gigabyte windforce gpu. They have great coolers that only take up 2 slots, instead of three.

Silence. My system as it stands is about 12-15db with my gtx460 fan modded to 20% but it'd like something more powerful with my new system. I do some audio recording and such and need a nearly passive system however i like to game as well so there's the tradeoff.
Most of the stock based and even inhouse designs for video cards are terrible acoustically, something most gamers are not really that caring of with gaming headsets and all. I'm really not even that happy with my msi cyclone as beyond 30% it has a terrible presence.
The only viable 580 coolers on the market is the (hard to find) sparkle 580 with accelero extreme (3 slot) and the gainward 580 looks interesting which also looks to be 3 slot.
Shaman is the best option though for the 580 as one can mount any fan they'd like.

Why not just place the computer outside the recording room?

It's never going to be 100% silent. And I believe that at stock, it's silent enough to not be audible.

Just place it elsewhere and run a 10-foot DVI cable and use a wireless mouse and keyboard.

Principle i guess and i like ease of access to connections instead of running a usb hub and long audio cables.n My next build will be for all purposes silent other than a 500rpm fan and the gpu i choose anyways. I'll be using a thermalright HR-02 and x-series power supply which won't start up till full load anyways. I'll make do with a single 580 or 590 though. I just want to build - dare i say it as it's a dangerous word - futureproof system in case i did find a deal on a second 580 or whatever.
Just wanted some input on a mobo with ideal layout.

I think you're making a mistake. Sometimes we hardware-lovers get hung up on a certain goal. I used to NEED to get m DDR-800s to 1066Mhz back with my Q6600. Why? I can't fully say.

I think that running the cables will be just as difficult or much less so, and it will give you a far more future-proof system.

In regards to the main question, I believe the UD7 will meet your needs perfectly:

Thermalright Shaman is a 3 slot cooler in a sense that it takes up 3 PCI slots by itself. You need at least 4 PCI slots to acomodate a video card with a Shaman on it.

You can shoehorn dual Shamans onto a UD7 mobo, but you need 2 PCI slots worth of free space below the lowest slot and you won't be able to use your Essence ST, since all the regular PCI slots will be blocked. GTX 590 is also not an option, can't fit two Shamans on the two GPUs of that card.

I just went with a single GTX580 with a Thermalright Shaman and a Thermalright VRM G2. Also used a Thermalright Silver Arrow as a CPU cooler, suspended the HDD in a NoiseMagic NoVibes III, and fit it all into a Silverstone FT02. Here's a couple pictures from my build.
