Phenom II x4 vs Phenom II x6 - Page 3

At this point, Sandy Bridge might not be as good of an idea.
Plus I think the performance gains are minimal. Real world games aren't going to show the difference between an SB, an X4, and an X6.
And the future proofing idea is nice, but really not true. Games are now being pushed by console tech. Black Ops, BC2, Dragon Age, GTA4...these games are all making greater use of 3-4 cores, because 3-4 was cutting edge when the consoles were being designed. The next gen of consoles are probably going to be using some form of octocore CPU, whether it be an HT type of solution or actual cores. Consoles usually use the best current available tech for their new iterations. I doubt they will be using thuban type cores, and game devs will follow that tech. Even Crytek figured out where the money really is.

I have to agree with what everything said about AMD being better than Intel in terms of price per performance. Sure, if I had gobs of money, I'd go Intel. And I'd overclock the crap out of it all the way to the 100c maximum temperature . But I don't have gobs of money, so...

Go with AMD. I'd say the x4 965 or 970 are good deals right now. If you do plan on learning to overclock, which I suggest you do, make sure you opt for a black edition processor (both of those are). Unlocked multiplier is nice.

I don't think the x6 is worth it for games. Do you play any old games? If so, you might actually degrade performance.
