2500K multiplier question.

Thread Starter
My 2500k is OC to 4.5GHZ @ 1.29v

It's stable and temperature are fine (60C MAX under load)

But when i run some CPU stress test (OCCT, Prime95 and benchmark test like passmark) in CPU-Z my multiplier never go over 39..

In the OCCT Linpack test i reach 45 in the first 60 seconde after that it return to 39..

In Prime95 it go to 45 for 4-5 second and return to 42 and 39...

My motherboard is an ASRock P67 extreme4

So is it normal or my setting aren't alright ?

Sorry I don't have a solution or suggestion, but I'm interested in this topic...

Let me get the straight, you set your multi for x45 in BIOS, shows up in CPU-Z as 4500 MHz (screen shots please). But when you stress using linx, Intel Burn, or Prime95, the multi (in CPUz) actully DROPS?!? Is that what you're saying. Screen shots please...

When i start CPU-Z if the system isn't under load my multiplier is at 16x.

Under load it raise to 45x for a short amount of time and drop between 37x and 42x and stay there...

Yes i put my multiplier to 45x in the BIOS.

This screen is 20 second after lauching OCCT Linpack test:

And this one is 30 second after lauching Prime95

Yes i put my multiplier to 45x in the BIOS.

Your version of CPU-Z is out of date. Go find 1.56.2 or 1.56.3.

i was having this same kind of issue with my TP67XE. What I did was raise the power limits from 95w to 120w in the bios. That fixed it for mw. I have no idea if you have this option available to you.

Your problem sounds very much like throttling. I read the techy spec sheet on the sandy bridge processors and the chips are designed to systematically lower the multiplier one notch at a time if there is a major problem with the chip, at a certain speed and temperature, until the problem goes away.

It doesn't seem your temps are that high... they seem to be normal... but having your chip downclock 4-5 seconds after you stess it seems to me to mean that the chip is getting information from somewhere that it is in trouble(most likely temperature wise) and so tries to save itselfe. This may be because the sensors are good(and the chip really is in trouble) or bad(the sensors are bad or sensor feed is bad).
If this is the problem you might need to RMA your board, but I'm not sure about other fixes or ways to test this.
