Video Card Suggestions

Thread Starter
I recently made the mistake of buying an nVidia 8400 GS. I was thinking about returning it if I can (newegg). A while back someone on here said it was one of the worst cards nVidia ever made.. and Windows rates it only as a 3.7 on its graphics (4.7 for gaming; all my other ratings are 4.7 or higher). So yeah, I'm not satisfied.

Issue here being that I only have a 300w power supply. I'm trying not to put a lot of money into this system because it isn't really worth it so I don't want a new power supply. I'm just trying to get a decent gaming card that will work with this system.

I'm playing Oblivion and HoN atm. Oblivion gets choppy sometimes but 80-90% of the time it runs fine. SC2 I can run fine on medium settings, just not some of the custom lagfest maps.

So with this power supply in mind, any suggestions with a budget from $50-$90?
Currently looking at HD 4670 or GeForce 9500 GT (both $50 after rebate) but my power supply doesn't meet their req's. Could I handle either of those?

Ok if the card says it needs a 400 watt power supply, how much lower than that can you go?
Do you really need 400w?

And do modern gaming cards generally need a minimum of 1G memory? Or is 512mb good enough?
Does more dedicated memory on the card take away from its speed at all?

I may go for a 400w then. What do you look for in a good power supply?

512 VRAM is more than enough at those resolutions.

Your best bet is to look in the for sale forums here on oc.net...
Look around for a cheap 8800gts 512 and a cheap psu to go with it. All together it shouldn't run you any more than 90-100 USD shipped.

That's what I would do if I were you!

Brand... PCP&C are good and so is Corsair. When in doubt, just post a link when you think you've found something and we can tell you if it junk or not.

This antec would be a good 400w power supply. The PSU is one thing you don't want to cheap out on. Think about it...it supplies power to everything in your system...and bad power can kill a system.
