crazy low upgrade budget

a friend of mine is rocking a P4 @ 3.4ghz (stock speed) and a 9400GT and he says he will have somewhere around $150. he first told me he wanted a new GPU but a $150 GPU (i was looking at a msi twinfrozr GTX460 768mb, i know its not the 1gb, but it is the best thing at $149) will be severely bottlenecked by a P4. so, with a general knowledge of what was in his computer already i set out to upgrade his whole computer. i will be reusing the case, PSU, RAM, and HDD. he does play games most FPS games i believe, but he plays at like 1280x768 or something like that, really low res so he doesnt need a lot of GPU power.

i came up with this:

ASRock A780LM-S AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD RS780L (760G) Micro ATX - $49 - will run AM3 CPUs and support DDR2 memory from his current computer. i decided to use his old ram to save money.

Palit GeForce 9800 GT 512MB - $59 - I know its an older card, but for $59 there is nothing faster than this card. i also considered a 5670, but they are atleast $79.

AMD Athlon II X2 255 Regor 3.1GHz
- $63 - i went with this cause its $3 more for a 200mhz increase, worth the $3 imho. i told him he could upgrade to an Athlon II X3 for $10 more and he said he will probably try to do that, so the X3 for $73 will be his best bet for price vs performance. the celerons are way too slow for games

anything you guys can think of that will do better than what i have above?

I dont see why that would not work but if u could try to save a lil bit and upgrade to a 9800GT 1GB not 512MB its like 94.99 not 59.99 trust me its worth it my friend has the 5770 512MB and i have the 1GB one and i smoke him (idk where he found a 512MB but watever i guess)

What's his stance on buying used? You might be able to get a slightly better motherboard and an Athlon X4 if you bought used off here for him, and you don't need anything more than a 9800GT by the sounds of it.

At that resolution, I can't think of a game that it wouldn't max out.

you could get a gtx 260 for $60 off ebay, and prolly a athlon x3 or x4 for the same price as the x2.

consider noise though. the 9800GT is a loud and annoying card and if he cares about noise it will be an issue. i'd go for a 5670 if the budget can be pushed as the noise would be worth it.

if not thats a solid choice of parts

True dat. I think I can speak for both of us when I say that my ears are significantly less sore now I have my 460.

GPU: http://www.overclock.net/video/92171...260-f-s-t.html

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157204 $45 shipped. If you are gonna go cheap, at least get this. Gives the option to upgrade to DDR3 in the future (DDR2 is still pretty expensive). Allows simple overclocking as well and from what I have read has a nice BIOS interface as well.

he doesnt really care much about that sort of thing... his setup is the most odd assortment of hardware and peripherals i have ever seen.

i originally excluded that board because of the nvidia chipset, i suppose ill give it a second thought. thanks

edit: no pcie 2.0.. kinda sux but it wont rly be an issue with a 9800GT

and a GTX260 would be nice, but his PSU cant rly handle more than a 9800GT. i would like to get a more powerful DX10 or 11 card, but such a low budget doesnt allow for it. if i could, i would go for a used 260 or 5770 or a 5670
