Build me an HTPC for ~$500

Thread Starter
It's tax season and my refund is coming soon. I'm looking for an HTPC setup with the ability to run most games. I plan on later on down the line throwing in a low profile 450. But for now, I just want it to record TV. I have 4GB of DDR2 memory and 2GB of DDR3 so I can probably omit those

Probably easier to through something together using the 2GB of DDR3 and add in another 2GB. How many sticks make up the 2GB?

Do you need an OS, remote control, keyboard, or mouse?

EDIT: What speeds/timings does the DDR3 RAM run at?

I have 2x 1GB 1600 sticks. But for an HTPC, does it honestly matter?

I do need an OS but I found a nice W7+tv tuner combo for $167. I do need a remote + KB/M

It doesn't matter much, I just need to make sure the motherboard I suggest supports the speed and I was thinking of pairing it with more RAM. Thinking about it, you'll do perfectly fine on 2GB for now; you can always upgrade later.

How much storage space do you think you might need? Will 1TB be enough?

AMD Athlon II X2 250 - no need for more power in an HTPC
ASRock M3A770DE - again, it's an HTPC, the number of PCI-E lanes isn't important
Asus EAH 5450 - highly recommended HTPC card.
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - great drive, one of the fastest 1TB drives around.
Antec Earthwatts EA-500D - 450W would be enough but decent 450W units on Newegg are pretty much all more expensive than 500W ones.
Total of that lot: $264.95.
Including this Windows 7 + TV Tuner combo: $431.95.

That leaves you about $70 to find a keyboard and mouse that you like. That all comes down to personal preference really.

I'm actually liking this. What about the case though, any suggestions?
And yes, down the line I'll add another 1TB HDD and possibly anotherlater

Damn, I knew there was something I'd left out!

I don't know what kind of keyboard and mouse you were thinking of getting, but you'll probably be hard pushed to get them + a decent case for $70.

This case looks nice

Somewhat pricey though.

I'd just take a look here on Newegg and see what takes your fancy, if you're looking for an HTPC style case. If you want a standard tower case to house the HTPC, that's completely different.

Meh, $500 plus a bit of wiggle room from my check.

Nice

Anyway, not too sure what to recommend on the case/keyboard/mouse front, they're the components that I find are much more down to personal choice than the others

Just take a look around and see what takes your fancy, really. That's what I've done when buying those three things before.
