Best replacement suggestion

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, I'm helping a friend upgrading his rig step by step, since he's on a budget.

And now the time has arrived to get a new graphics card, he has a old (but still nicely kicking) 4870HD from gigabyte with one heck of a loud cooler (the reason why I suggested him to replace it first, it truly is horrible).

I don't want to suggest him mine (sig rig) because I'm not fully satisfied with it either. So, what's the best option with all those new cards flying around? Hop up the first # to a 6870? Or go for something similar priced from Nvidia?

Any suggestions welcome, cheers.

4870 is about 5770 so probably 6870 in order to see some improvement. Here is the link shown some number.

It depends on the games he will be playing. If he plays more often TWIMTBP games he should go for Nvidia, if not, choose the prettiest one HD6870 and GTX560 performance is pretty much the same, and so is their cost.

Some recommendations if he is on a budget (NVIDIA Cards)

Gigabyte 460 gtx 1gb.Awesome card.Runs really cool. The fan is so quiet you can barely hear it even when its on 100%.Idle temps around 35 degrees. Its selling really cheap now since the 560 gtx has just been released

Maybe another option would be to get a 470 gtx. They are also selling quite cheap now since the 570 gtx has been released. But it has hotter temps and uses more power than the 460 gtx.

Maybe spend a little extra and get a 560 gtx.Its not that far away from a 570 gtx performance. He can always sli them in the future which would equal performance better than a 580 gtx.

Hope this has been helpful

Alright, thanks for the suggestions, Hes a gamer so it will mostly, if not only be used for that.
Lets say it like this, lots of new games incoming in the next few months for the PC, and he wants to be sure that his rig is ready to handle the new graphics. His 4870HD is doing Bad company 2 on medium 1680x1050 perfectly, but on high the FPS drop is to great. Would a 6870 or a 560 improve things a lot or just barely? (Don't worry about CPU or RAM)
