Calling all people who downgrade drivers or don't update because new versions suck

Poll Results: do you update your ATI drivers?

  • 56% (44)
    Yes, every time.
  • 24% (19)
I sometimes look for the version that works best with my computer
  • 19% (15)
No, never, I only stick with one release that works best. ATI rarely fixes stuff.

I stopped updating since the 10.10 catalyst version, because the releases after that made my computer wait for 5 minutes to switch from and to fullscreen mode. In ANY game. I went back to 10.10, and I'm fine. Keep that in mind while you read this.

So, today my friend, which I would greatly like to insult right now (but won't) started to link me to the new ATI 11.1 driver update.
He has a 5770 and I have a 5870, so not that big of a difference.

Then I tell him that I won't update because the newer drivers crash/lag my computer, and that I will be staying with 10.10 for a long time. Then he started to laugh, call me an idiot, and say "ATI improves the drivers with every single release". We all know that isn't true, and he is one of those people that won't listen to anything you say.

And I have personally seen dozens of people who say that they stopped updating the video card drivers whenever there's a new thread about the latest release.

So, I'm including a poll with this.

Thank you for your time and let's kick his ass.

tl;dr: vote "never updated"

I update every month , new release drivers fix bugs , known issues widely spread its the best thing to do for stability and compatibility with games .. 99% of hardcore pc gamers will update drivers as simple as that .. 5870 only need 10.10 , us 69XX guys need that 11.1 driver ! it made a huge difference .

exactly.
My friend has a 5770, so that is irrelevant to him.
New drivers only crashed and failed for me.

As annoying as your friend probably is, sounds like your as stubborn as he is lol.

First
"ATI improves the drivers with every single release"
Is 100% true. That's the reason for updates, there is no argument about that at all.

Second
While updates can sometimes harm your system, because they were designed wrong, that chance is EXTREMELY low. If it does occur, 99% of the time a hotfix is released. Think about it, the updates are tested on multiple systems, betas are released, etc.

I'd have to side with him on this one. You do have a valid point, that sometimes they can cause problems, but that's probably just user error.

You do realize that was a hotfix designed for users specific problems fixed in the release? If you weren't expecting a decline then you're seriously misunderstanding.

Dont know how thats possible , i think only 6950/70 owners should be using the 11.1 driver i believe it was purely based on better compatibility for these cards and nothing else .. So i wouldnt expect more performance out of your 58XX , 68XX cards because previous releases like 10.10 , 10.11 , 10.12 were the best optimized drivers for your cards .. 10.12 and 10.11 dont work great at all on 69XX cards thats why the hotfix beta came out for us to test and then the official 11.1 a couple of days ago .

58XX , 68XX do not need to go to 11.1 .. Unless i am totally wrong and they did fix a few bugs these cards encountered im not too sure but im sayin it how i see it .

10.3 was the final driver I upgraded to because any and all after that were utter trash. This was the BEST driver for me, my crossfired 5770's, 5850, and 5870.

They may fix 1 thing, but break 5 things with each release.

Far from "100% Truth".

I've only got ATI cards in my HTPC systems right now, and I update the drivers whenever I actually think about it. It's never caused me any harm.
My 5850 only likes 10.5, everything else I tried bogs my frames per second to teens-20s in games I normally get 91+ FPS after a few hours of play
