HDMI w/ onboard audio?

Hi guys, this is my first post. I'm building my second computer, but had a few questions while I waited for my delayed video card to get here. Well, I only upgrade once every 5-10 years and am currently running a Pentium 4 with a 8800GT (no HDMI, obviously). So, I'm new to having HDMI on a video card and had a few questions:

1) Could I stream audio through the onboard 3.5mm stereo and HDMI at the same time?

2) Is the quality different between onboard and HDMI? I'd imagine HDMI's quality would be better because of the digital signal but I know it depends a lot on setup so here's what I'd be doing:

HDMI:
HDMI > Television > Audio out into a stereo amplifier > 1 subwoofer, 2 back speakers, 4 front.

Onboard:
5 speaker, 1 subwoofer.

I'd really like to run my subwoofer computer speaker combo through the 3.5mm stereo and HDMI at the same time to get the extra subwoofer, just wondering if it's possible and if so: how?

EDIT: The video card is a HD5870 Radeon @ 1GB GDDR5 and the motherboard is a ASUS Gigabyte (forgot model).

you can use the hdmi cable purely for video and use the 3.5 mm for audio, this would be the best setup, so long as the audio wire isn't to close to other wires (people claim the magnetic field of the other wires interferes with the analog audio signal, if your not an audiophile this does not really matter). no point putting audio through video card then to hdmi, unless you want less clutter outside of your computer.

I actually wanted to know if I could have my audio out of the HDMI AND the 3.5mm onboard at the same time, that way I could have a total of 11 speakers / 2 subwoofers vs 1/2. I know it's a little much for a computer, but I have the products so why not see if I can combine them?
