Need help overclocking Athlon II X4 630 please

Thread Starter
I started to overclock my Athlon II X4 630 2.8 GHz. today. I read as much information as I could find and started tinkering. I raised the FSB to 250 and lowered the multiplier from 14 to 12. I am using a stock heatsink at the moment frown.gif. I managed to get up to 3.0 Ghz with these steps. Here is my CPU-Z and CoreTemp. Any suggestions on what I can do and also suggestions for an upgraded heatsink will be appreciated. This is an extra desktop that I am using while I am building my i7 870 system. I would also love to know a good heatsink / fan for the 870.

If your strapped for a cash, a good heatsink for your i7 870 is the Coolermaster Hyper 212+. It's usually like $30. Also, having a stock heatsink will limit your overclocking headroom. You can try following Gyro's steps in this thread: http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/91...n98td-evo.html

One problem, lower your HT Link to 8x. Your HT Link should be right around 2000MHz. Keep your NB as high as possible. If its unstable, add CPU-NB voltage.

That chip should do 3.5GHz on the stock cooler easy. So put your voltage at around 1.425v, and put the multi back to 14x.

No love. I put the HTLink to 8x or 2000MHz. Upped the CPU V to 1.425 and upped the Multi back to 14. My current NB is at 2500MHz. Booted up and opened CPU-Z and CoreTemp. I then ran Prime95 and after a couple of minutes I went to Inernet Explorer and blue screen followed by restart occured. What should my CPU-NB V value be (ball park) and what about the NB V? Also, what should my max temp be? Thanks for the info.

Every time I run Prime95 on "blend" and my temp gets to about 50-51 C I get a blue screen and restart. Is that the stress test I should be running or should it be on one of the other settings?

no i have the same exact cpu and have it oc'd to 3.430ghz atm. gonna push it a little higher soon. but for cooling i would suggest the h50 that is what i am using and it is a beast with you get rid of the stock fan that comes with it and put 2 fans push and pull combo with it. i idle now with artic silver 5 thermal grease at 28c and get about 42c on load.

don't use blend use the one higher or the one right above it. all you are needing to do with prime95 is to see if there is either enough voltage or if your cpu is getting to hot when under stress. but with amd cpu you need to keep it below 50c underload so it does not chugging due to to much heat.

I'll try running that test in just a second. I took the Multi down to 13 and with FSB at 250 I'm hitting about 3.25 GHz. Here is shot of CPU and RAM in CPU-Z. Going to try stressing and picking the Multi back up to 14, hopefully.

So the temp got up to 50 C pretty quickly so I stopped the test. I will await further instruction. Thanks for the quick replies.
