ATI vs NVIDIA - Page 3

I've been running a 4350 passively cooled card in the past, but switched to the onboard on that mobo (HD4200) because the card runs a bit warm in my new case (Silverstone Milo ML-03B). Didn't notice a difference in performance.

My main HTPC runs a GT240.

I prefer ATI's overscan/underscan options for fitting the screen to an HDTV over Nvidia's custom sizing option - choosing to make icons/text larger in Win7 messes with Nvidia's resolution options. I prefer to run icons at 150% in my HTPC's, but then I can't size the screen simply to fit. With the ATI CCC, you just select the appropriate over/underscan and it works.

I have had some driver issues with other ATI cards, namely a 5770 in my main rig. Yes, I know they can be made to work, but for the money (any money), a video card should be plug and play. Period. Other cards are, why not all of them. Anything less is unacceptable in my opinion. For that reason, I am done with ATI for discrete graphics.

Come on guys, he is asking for a HTPC, not a gaming rig.

I just pulled a GT210 and put in a HD4550 from my kids computer (used as a HTPC and basic internet rig). Noticed no difference. Only reason I swapped it was the GT210 has a very noisy fan, the 4550 is passive. The 4550 is a "better" card, but not by much. It is a 25w card vs the 30w of the 210. As for drivers, I just shut the computer down, pulled the 210 and installed the 4550, turned it on, logged in, it automatically downloaded and installed the ATI drivers, rebooted and it all worked fine.

I also had a 4350 in my bedroom HTPC for a while, then went up to a 5450, but switched to onboard (HD4200) when I upgraded the CPU and again noticed no difference (I may put the 5450 back in it since it is just sitting on the shelf now).
This system does have an issue with sleep mode, but only when it does it by itself. When it wakes up, sometimes the sound does not work (over HDMI), sometimes the overscan defaults back to original settings (leaves black bars all around the screen) sometimes no problems at all. If I manually put it to sleep, it does not have any problems. It does this no matter which card it is using, so I am guessing a driver issue? I have only had the 4550 in my kids computer for 2 days, so not sure if it does it or not.

My Main HTPC has a 8600GT. Only reason I have not upgraded it is that I need s-video out, and no newer cards have that.

My personal feeling is that ATI makes better HTPC cards than Nvidia. Lower power and seem to have more features.

Thanks DaveG and blupupher. I guess I'll just wait until the low end 6000's come out so I can have UVD3.

I switched to nVidia from Ati because of the decoder of ATi (UVD). It seems to have bugs when watching some certain videos which they haven't fixed it till now.

Check this thread from Ati's website for more details for the UVD bug
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1224566

Plus, I want a better experience(not dealing with bugs) when it comes to watching movies & I also watch Anime.

I think nVidia does it better because I can use it's shaders to do the extra Sharpening/De-interlacing etc.......

As far as power consumption is concerned nVidia is also very good & Guys I don't watch TV for the Whole day, Hence even If I paid a little more for a hassle free system, I don't mind it.

Regards,

Nvidia : has 7.1 hd-audio output over hdmi , has 3D output, has good drivers, free physx card and a little overpriced.

Ati : cheap for its performance, good for gaming, eyefinity(but you need the 6850 and up to use them because anything lower and you get choppy results), good picture quality and bad drivers.

you choose, i lean on nvidia because of phyx.

Why are you reviving all these old threads? Physx is pointless on a htpc so you just fell over

I just wanted people's personal experience over ati and nvidia for HTPC's, which means low end video cards.

I vote ati. All the 5xxx cards can bitstream full HD audio over hdmi.

And the cards can be had for under 50 bucks.

I like nvidia in my main rig but in the htpc ati is great.

I use nvidia for my gaming rig and ati for the HTPC.
ATI has garabage new drivers, but older stuff ( 10.6 works for me!) is good & stable and works perfect for a HTPC...for some reason I always ran into minor quirks with nvidia when it came to media.

If noise is a concern, I went through 3 different 210's and 1 220 and returned them all due to fan noise, which is how I wound up with my passively cooled 4350. Shoot for a passively cooled option if your case has decent cooling.
