[BB] The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's Menu System Overhaul - Page 6

You do realize PC has mouse so you can fit in entire menu on one screen so you can see all the options at once instead of scrolling...

Well because my hands are not on the up down left and right keys. They are on WASD. Actually I use ESDF but that is another matter... We have keyboards not controllers. We use "I" for inventory and "C" for character sheet. That kind of stuff.

I don't wanna have to scroll through things because the console is limited with keys. Damnnit I'm NOT. I've got tons of keys I can hit to take me right where I want to go. Heck it's part of the reason I don't have a controller hooked up to my PC.

I don't understand why they're saying it makes info more accessible. The UI keeps getting worse with every subsequent title.

Because it's getting more accessible for consoles. If anyone's played Morrowind on both PC and Xbox, you'll know what I'm talking about. Each design worked well for its respective platform, and wouldn't quite have worked well on the other. So what did Bethesda do?

They refined the console version more, and stuck it on both PC and Xbox versions of Oblivion. Cut the PC UI entirely. This is why the Oblivion UI had to be so radically overhauled on PC.

Skyrim is just taking it to the next logical degree: console-friendly scrolling menus that will work even better with a controller, and even worse with a mouse.

Oh so the problem you guys have is whether or not 'i' will take you to the inventory and 'q' will bring up quests, etc? I have a feeling they aren't going to leave you hanging in that department...

No, that's just a tiny fraction of the UI issue. I can dial down the resolution and graphics settings, connect a 360 controller to my PC and make high pitched squealing rage noises while I play but it won't fix anything.

No no. I wont insult you. I hope they DO make it like that. That is part of the issue though. Glad you recognize part of our "gripes", if you will. But even if they do include one key to get to the menu as and option(and they just might), the fact is that PC players are used to that "Excel" type of menu with tons and tons of info. I'd go so far as to say we like it rather than scrolling through a bunch of menus full of info we wish were on one or two screens. We sit close to the screen and can see all this very well. I think that is the other "big gripe".

In the end I hope you are right and they wont leave us hanging in that department.

I guess I can see that being a problem but for me it would never be like that... I guess I'm just not waist deep into PC gaming like most people here. Yeah I play on my 360 much more than my PC, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good game on my PC. The latest one that I found real joy in was Alien Swarm. As far as the information presentation, I've always been a fan of the the simplistic approach that they are taking with Skyrim.

Personally, I feel like the 'big gripe' you guys have is fairly niche in the grand scheme of what everybody wants... but that being said I'm sure there will be plenty of mods to cater to everybody's needs if that isn't how it is in the game by default.

I just finished catching up on all of the released information about Skyrim, and I cannot wait for this game. Simply CANNOT. Initially, I was very unhappy knowing that it's unlikely co-op will make an appearance in Skyrim, but after going through the information, I am generally okay with it. I'd still love to see it get in, but if it didn't I'll know those resources went to something that was meaningful at least to enhance the immersion and depth the game produces.

If they still use DX9 just because consoles have to use it I'm gonna rage.
