Want to upgrade to 12gbs...do they need to be the same brand?

I have 6gb (3x2gb) of Corsair xms3 ram and I want to add another 6gb. Is it imperative to buy the same brand ram with the same timing and speed? Would it be ok to buy a different brand witht he same timing and speed? Or does it not matter? I have a ga-x58-ud3r btw.

Thanks

Doesnt matter what brand they are... but its better to have matching memory for overclocking.

But if you get some with same timings, voltage and MHZ it should be fine, might not be able to overclock the RAM but oh well.

thanks for your reply. i was always under the impression that same brand ram works the best together, even if you arent intending to overclock. could you shed some light on the performance differences between dual-channel and triple channel? reason i was asking because i was also considering upgrading to an additional 8gb (4gbx2) as opposed to 6gb triple channel

triple is best, but only slightly

Hello think of two highways one has 3 lines other has 2 and 1000 cars moving through. It's the same with rams it gives you 3 channels for your data to pass so it's faster it's not that simple but basicly it is correct me if i am wrong people In my opinion stick with 2x3 if you don't need high capacity have a nice day.

thanks for clarifying. that much i knew. i was just wondering if the extra 2gbs would mean more. now what if i were to occupy the three slots with 4gb 4gb and 2gb, would triple channel still work?
