Okay so I am a total newb when it comes to internet security. What are the best practices to take to protect my PC?

Do encrypters actually work and do they slow down your HD response time?

What is the best AV software out there?

Any other input would be appreciated as well Thnx

I don't know if it is the best, but I have been using AVG for a long time now without any problems whatsoever.

MS Security Essentials/Malwarebytes/AVG + safe surfing habits (no more pr0n, sketchy ad sites, and general discretion). Linux by far however, is the safest OS to use.

Yes I have heard Linux is pretty safe while on the internet, but I am a gamer and hate Wine. Maybe I should just set up another browsing rig from some spare parts just to surf with.

Nod is pretty decent huh. Thanks for the input!

AVG just seems cheesy to me but Ive heard its pretty decent for a free AV app from other users as well. Appreciate the input

You could also use Firefox with Adblock plus, and NoScript.
Then you don't need to really worry about most viruses in the 1st place.
You would still have to watch out for stuff in downloads.
And as they said above MSE, and Malwarebytes.

well i'm a gamer and i use linux for gaming
and wine ant that bad if you custom compile it and know what your doing
but you can duel boot linux and only do your web stuff on it
or install "calm AV" or "nod32 for linux" on the linux boot and use it to scan for viruses, malware,etc.... on the windows partition

I had used Firefox before a while back but it was a resource hog so I dumped it. Have they lightened up the load on newer versions? Most of the stuff i download are drivers, and benchmarks and such from reputable sites, so I should be relatively safe on that aspect, not foolproof I do realize.

And I am currently using MSE but i got hit with the infamous AV8 virus which from a quick google search has been declared as adware, is this correct?
