20TB server. need help lol - Page 3

Although I did no build my home server, Windows Home Server OS is very intuitive, and the duplication feature is probably better than a raid for the uses in the home. I bought a prebuilt HP x310 home server and it has a atom dual core @ 1.6ghz (HT to 4 cores) and 2 gb of ram. It even runs procon for a BC2 server with out phasing it. Once you set it up and install the OS, you can run headless and just remote connect if you need to manipulate the Operating system. Like previously stated, a cheap AMD dual core would be the best if you're not planning on doing many processes on it. The other features of windows home server you may like is the ability to access it from elsewhere. FTP is cool, but with whs you can just use a web browser, so you could share stuff with your friends and family fairly easily. My wife takes pictures of our niece and then puts the finished jpegs on their login account on our home server so her faimly can download and print them when they want.

Just my thoughts, but a raid 1+0 or raid 5 is a bit over kill sometimes, and can waste space depending on what it's protecting. Also, with the amount of money you're looking to drop into this project, $100 for an OS isn't a very hefty price.

You know, for the hell of it, you should get an AMD Quadfather motherboard, ( Asus L1N64WS- SLI). It's the only board that I remember with 12 SATA 3.0Gb/s ports on it.

Throw in a early generation Phenom (you'll have to ensure the bios is updated), or two and have a ridiculous file server.

Why not just pick up a storage array like a QNAP if you are only going to use it for storage. Also 10x 2gb drives in raid 5 only equals about 16tb

NAS cost much more than a home-built file server and they are much more limited.

The largest NAS QNAP has is 8-bay. He would need to buy 3 of these and each cost $1500+.

I don't think you will need more then a dual core and 2 gb of ram. My current server is a Pentium M 1.6 with 768 Mb of ram. It's only serving 2 HDD's though. If your not accessing everything at once then I think a dual core will have no problem.

That would be the easiest, probably pretty expensive though... If you have your heart on a server with that much storage you will need a good raid card for sure. The Cheap quad core and 4gb is plenty of power for a file server. I've used free nas and it was pretty good, but if i were you I would just install server 2008 and share the folders out on your network.

Another option would be to look at something like a Promise VessRaid. 16 drives to start, and you can daisy chain up to 4(I think) additional 16 drive enclosures off of it.

Relatively reasonable for what it is :

2400$? wow...I don't think sinking that kind of loot into a home server for movies is even remotely worth it.

I have actually been considering something very similar to this with an old desktop. I have a somewhat noobish question though. Would something like this work for the setup:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-016-_-Product

I am not sure if something like this would be overkill. I just happened to see it and thought it might work since I have no idea what said computer may have inside it in terms of the number of sata ports (it was a simple, no frills build for my lady so she can play Hello-Kitty Island Adventure at max settings.... 96 frames son!).

With one of these, I would just add the card and plug it in. Would it only work as a bootable OS array or would the machine pick it up as just extra storage once I set it to a raid configuration.

Boy, I hope that makes sense. How about this: would I have to put an operating system on the disks I put inside this enclosure or just plug it into a machine with an OS already setup?

I would love to hear people's thoughts.
