Fan controller for 6 AP-15s

Thread Starter
3 push, 3 pull. I'm pretty sure I can't plug all 6 into the motherboard headers, but I haven't actually looked at the power numbers involved. I'd much rather use a fan controller anyway, now the question is which one?

Would I ever want to have the push or pull fans run at different speeds?

I'd like for the OS to be able to see what the fans are doing but from what I understand, when you add a fan controller the system loses the ability to monitor individual fans. I could be wrong.

dunno about the controller but you might want to have different intake speeds than outtake speeds.

1. speed of fan means how much air can it move.
2. assuming your case is not mesh, fans can control air pressure inside your case

a positive air pressure or otherwise known as overpressured room (instead of 1 atm you have 1.01 atm or something like that) is good to keep the dust out of your case. so if you have a regulation that allows you to keep the fans at different speeds that would mean a little less dust in your case (but not no dust)

I have a Lamptron FC-5 and run 4 fans daisy chained on one channel, and 2 for a different radiator on another channel. Then the rear case fan is on it's own channel. I pretty much run the AP-15 at full speed all the time, but sometimes I do lower them.

I've also done 3/3 push pull on a Rheobus with yate loons.

I typically do all fans same speed,

AP-15's draw less than one watt at 12V per my testing, so that's only going to amount to a whopping 6 watts.

Most fan controllers these days are capable of somewhere between 20-30 watts per channel, so you should have no problem running the 6 GTs with just about any controller out there. You could easily run them all on one channel.

\\
That is 1 Watt running, or on startup? Either way 1850RPM GTs won't cause problems even doubled up on a 20W per channel controller.

having different speed push fans vs pull fans on the rad won't create a positive air pressure environment in the case.

Let both your push and pull fans run at the same speed, and as high rpm as your ears can tolerate.

As for a fan controller, I highly recommend the Sunbeam Rheobus Extreme. 30 watts per channel, 6 channels total. More than enough power to run all your fans and then some.

Thanks everyone for the info! +rep for all Especially Martin, who not only generates data and excellent analyses, but posts it for some knucklehead who didn't go look up the wattages himself.

I've heard the Rheobus Extreme recommended several times, so it sounds like a great investment. Also, push/pull at same speed, probably even on the same channel.

The only question now is: positive air pressure is good, right? Well, I have Lian Li PC-A71F with stock fans. Do I need to get massive intake fans with higher CFM than the 6 AP-15s to get positive pressure? My front intake fan, which is a biggy, has a DEMCI filter on it but the rear fans are 100% stock kit. The filters came as two, so I may be able to get one on the back. Not sure.

I'll post in another thread if it would be more relevant.

You could get a T-Balancer BigNG, which can interface with SpeedFan or many other similar programs, but you could probably daisy chain them onto one or two motherboard headers. As said before, the Gentle Typhoons use very little electricity. A decent motherboard's header is almost certainly good for six watts.
