Overclocking HiS 5870

Thread Starter
I have a HiS 5870 1GB I got a while ago, MSI afterburner used to let me adjust the voltage to whatever I wanted but I thought there was a problem with the card so I flashed the bios to the asus bios(http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/5...24.090915.html), turns out it was windows 7 that was causing games to freeze. The original bios was http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/5...24.090914.html which never let me go above 900/1300 in CCC.

The problem I'm having now is when I go above 900mhz on the Core clock with the Asus bios, after a few minutes of gameplay the catalyst driver crashes and the screen goes black for a few seconds before it returns, then works for about 30s and crashes again. I would like to know how I can fix that, I am looking into getting this cooler http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/c..._5870_review/1 . The tempretures I see in MSI afterburner when I set the clocks to 950/1250 when playing cod blackops maxed out is around 71 degrees so I doubt this is a tempreture issue, I have a 650w Corsair PSU so I don't think it's a power issue. Also please not that I cannot tweak voltage now with the ASUS bios on this card. Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: I'm Running 10.12 Catalyst

As you say not a temp issue. You need more volts to run that overclock.

So do I just change back to the HiS bios?

The issue can be one of two things...

One, even though your temps are reporting 71C, your VRM's might be getting a bit toasty. I found with my 5870 that even though I had low GPU temps, the VRM's would make the card lose stability when I added over a certain amount of voltage.

Two, if the HIS BIOS is not letting you clock anything over 900mhz, then just edit the msiafterburner.cfg file and change the EnableUnofficialOverclocking option from 0 to 1.

(That .cfg file is in your ProgramFiles/MSIAfterburner folder btw)

PS- Which exact HIS card do you have? Is it a reference model??

I have the same card with the same ASUS bios and had the same issues. Two things helped me fix those issues. More voltage and stabilize my overclock. After i finally got my overclock rock solid and tweaked settings that didnt play nice like disable hardware acceleration in flash and disable c1e, i was good to go. I need 1.25v to hit 950 on my card but i have a very aggressive fan profile in Afterburner that keeps it cool. I game regularly at 975/1300 with no problems. Hopefully this post helps you since i was in the same boat a year ago.

@ B.O Punk, yes the ref. model

@dir d with the same ASUS bios how did you get voltage settings? In MSI afterburner it shows me nothing. With the cooler I'm getting I can push over 1GHZ easily because the cooling is just insane if you look at the review, the temps are 36degrees lower then ref.

Edit: nvm I had to unlock voltage control lol. I'm gonna try your settings now dir d
