Black screen only mouse pointer nothing loads

Thread Starter
so a friend had an issue with his laptop not starting up right. I have it and have been playing around with the laptop for a couple of days. the computer starts fine but will not load anything in safe mode or normal. its a toshiba satellite A215. windows vista home premium.
ctrl+alt+del does nothing.
i was thinking of reinstalling windows but i will have to activate it after the installation. i was reading that there are ways of getting around it but i am not sure on how to do this. not using cracks or anything. something about backing up the activation file and just replacing it in safe mode. nothing has changed as far as hardware.

Thanks

edit
forgot to mention that there are not restore points saved or backup points saved i have gone through that already.

It MIGHT be malware, in which case there is an excellent guide stickied in the Networking and Security forums.

If you can at any point get into Windows, ComboFix might help.

checked that.
i cant seem to figure it out so im going to reinstall windows. how can i get this done without having to reactivate it after? its activated right now but once i reinstall it will ask to activate again. since the key has already been used, activated once, i am assuming it will not allow me to reuse the same key.

thanks

Bottom line.....

1) A Virus or Malware is effecting your system.... (NOTE: This is usually the first step if you can see anything while loading windows)

2) Critical Files have been moved.... (this is a common problem with newer computer users)

Because you can see the Mouse, I'm ruling out driver issues for video, probably and most likely not the case here...

Fastest solution download and burn Ubuntu to a CD (google & research about it), save all of your files you want to save to a USB Thumb Drive or put in a second hard drive for backup, and reinstall your Operating System, PROVIDED you have the original install disc!

If you do NOT have the original install disc, then you will need to try to access the boot options at startup to recover your hard drive to restore it to the Factory Image, if it has this option, if not, well.....

Take your computer to a tech shop, that's your last resort, naturally....

However, if files have not been moved, and it's just a virus or malware, you can try Avira's Rescue System (google it), it's a live CD used to remove viruses and Malware from your computer.

This MIGHT do the trick..

i have a friend who works at geek squad and had him do a virus scan he said that traces were found and removed. i know that the software that they use has 5-7 different virus scanners. but it did not fix it.

i have the oem os but i think after reinstalling windows it will ask to activate it but since it has activated before it will not allow me to use it after the 30 days for activation.

thanks

Are you getting a BIOS screen? Have you tried taing the battery out unplugg it and hold the power button down for 30 seconds? Some times a residual charge can get trapped in the laptop and prevent it from booting properly. I saw this for the first time a couple months ago.

If your virus scanner cannot remove the problem, suspect files have been moved or corrupted, nevertheless, the EASIEST way to fix the whole is issue is to....

1) Download Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD ISO & Burn it, then boot from it..
2) Save all of your files off your hard drive..
3) Repartition your Hard Drive (save 20+ GB for Backup as the LAST Partition**)
4) Reinstall Windows on the 1st Primary Partition

** The backup partition should be an Extended Partition w/ NTFS, you can remove the drive letter from it so it won't show up in "Computer or My Computer" as a drive, just go to control panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management > right click on the drive and select change letter.

This will hide the Backup Partition, then use a disc parition to image backup software, there are a few free ones, AFTER you have installed windows, updated all your drivers and windows itself, but DO NOT install any software other than drives & updates, this way you can work from a 100% pure clean copy, you can also use Windows Backup if you have it available (windows vista / 7 only).

Hope this was helpful, and believe me, I fix computers every day, reinstalling windows and making a backup is the #1 solution to most problem, this way you can fix all issues in the future FAST (5-20 minutes!) by restoring the original disc image to the partition.

DON'T FORGET TO BACKUP YOUR MBR PARTITION AS WELL!!! (Obviously you wouldn't backup your backup partition, lol, though you could save the image to another media like another HDD, or if you have a large USB Drive you may be able to save it to that, which is really nice!)

Just restore it to factory defaults after transferring all needed files off of it. Activation isn't a problem with these OEM licenses.
