sauce

The fine print of the amendment to the DMCA specifically mentions 'wireless telephone handsets' rather than electronics in general, but it won't take an expensive lawyer [especially with GeoHot present to describe how a phone and a console like the PS3 are identical in every way but their ascribed role in society] to overturn what sony is trying to do.

In short, What GeoHot did was not illegal, but it currently falls into a grey area. A court case will follow this, and I'd be willing to bet my rig that GeoHot wins and sony ends up with egg on their face.

Claiming such does not make it factual. You and I have debated on this in the past, and I stand firmly where I did before.

DMCA says it's legal to do what GeoHot did on a mobile smartphone. The only differences between a mobile smartphone and a console are the arbitrary roles we ascribe to them. As such, I'm willing to bet that GeoHot will win the court case that will follow this RO.

Just because you disagree doesn't make my opinion on the matter any less reasonable, particularly when there is legal precedent on my side of the equation.

It won't help Sony much the fact that they are moving Playstation onto Android PHONES, or making the PSP2 into a PHONE as well. Or that the PS3 community has wanted Skype for years, and that you can communicate via the PS3 Eye. It's more than just a console obviously.

Again, this dude didn't hack the KEYS right? Why isn't Sony going after the dudes that broke their KEYS??? Geo was just a lot louder about applying the keys in a manner that's more useful to the community.

He did NOT threaten sony in any way, the entire case is a civil case. Explain how he threatened sony, explain it in good enough detail, I might reconsider. So far all I see is a hacker who documented how he circumvented their security. With that he made a presentation about it, and about how they were able to do so. He didn't actually create any online tools, rather he published the method to do so. The ONLY illegal activity that he might get prosecuted for is directly circumventing security under the DCMA.

Extortion? Threats? I don't know what your smoking, but I sure as hell want you to pass it this way. You really don't have a clue on how this is going to go down. Did you even follow the Bunny case? On how he hacked the Xbox and published the entire thing in a College paper, free of charge. By the time he published it Microsoft knew the cat was out of the bag and there was NOTHING they could do to close it. This is the EXACT same thing. Now we have the firmware, we know EXACTLY what code we need to flash to make a modchip. The cat's out of the bag again! Oh noes! As of now there is nothing Sony can really do for long term, we just need to get full NAND access for flashing and it's over. I could easily see physical modchips coming out for this, all sony is doing is making 1 hacker look bad. It's honestly chump change, they tried to squash the USB Jailbreak and succeeded pretty well. This time however they royally screwed themselves, pretty bad too.

Hardware masking + firmware masking + NAND flashing = Goodness

[edit] Remember this as the hacker that destroyed the PS3 security.
