GTX570 and 120Hz refresh rate

Thread Starter
A week ago I bought a GTX 570 as an upgrade to my GTX 260. I also use Samsung 2233RZ as my monitor. Since I updated to 266.58 drivers I've been having some problems with refresh rate.

1. If I put 120Hz as refresh rate (at desktop) 570's idle/2D clocks automaticaly jump to 3D clocks, and stay that way... therefore it never idles and it's always heating up.

2. In some games 120Hz doesn't seem half as smooth as it was with 260 and lower fps. It probably even isn't 120Hz, 'cause with ~60 frames per second there's screen tearing which should only appear at 120+ fps with 120Hz.

3. On Windows XP, after installing those same drivers there's no difference if I put 120Hz refresh rate... it looks just as 60Hz did.

On GTX260 I was using 260.XX drivers, and it was a lot better experience than with GTX570 and 266.58. I mean, GTX570 doubled my framerates and yet gameplay seems choppier.

I already tried reinstalling windows and all drivers, and it didn't fix anything, so I guess nvidia is to blame here. Anybody noticed anything similar?

Just go with Windows 7, XP doesn't have any benefits anymore. Just run Virtual XP if you need it.

Win7 is my primary OS, and first two problems described are on it. Only the third problem is on XP.

3d vision is only supported by vista and win7 so no wonder it makes any difference i believe, but i know nothing about this so ignore this post.

First off, Try enabling Vsync on 120hz. Also, XP doesn't support 3d vision, and most likely 120hz. Vsync cap your games to 120FPS, it will help. Also, since 120hz needs 2x the processing power IN THE DESKTOP, it can't stay in idle clocks.

120Hz is not exclusively for 3d vision. With 260 I always had 120Hz refresh rate both on 7 and XP, and there was never a single problem.

Would you mind explaining how I used 120Hz with 260 and 3d vision disabled? And also, it was idling at that time. With 110Hz and 100Hz clocks go back to idle/2d, but with 120Hz they don't.

I just got my asus 120hz today. My clocks won't idle till I switch to 100hz. Haven't tried many games yet but I did notice in crysis at fullscreen 1080 the game defaults to 50hz so I set it to windowed and get my 120hz back. Also benched batman AA and it was smooth as butter. I'll be messing around with it tonight see if I get any tearing like your experiencing.

I run my 2233rz @ 110hz for desktop and 120hz for gaming. It's a little cumbersome having to go into the control panel each time. I've posted in the driver forum asking about an application with profile support. It would be nice to have the ability to change from 110hz to 120hz via a keyboard based shortcut. I never trust anything that does so automatically.

As above, I found crysis will not run at 120hz with the default setup. Same goes for Warhead. I run the game at 1600x900 windowed. There is a way to trick crysis to run fullscreen at 120hz, and that is to create a custom resolution identical to your maximim at 120hz. I have no idea why this works, but it does. The downside being you can no longer run at 110hz. Remember also that to delete/disable custom resolutions you need to follow an annoying procedure:
1. Switch to lower resolution that standard
2. close nvidia control panel
3. click custom resolutions and delete
4. close nvidia control panel
5. switch back to max resolution

and people say nVidia drivers are flawless smile.gif
