Best Budget Air Cooler for my i5 2500K?

Thread Starter
I need to pick up a temporary air cooler to allow me a moderate overclock for now until I get some extra cash for a higher-end unit.

The Cooler Master Hyper 212+ gets ridiculous reviews for its price but I've also read some that showed it doesn't live up to the hype. Another great option seems to be the Xigmatek Dark Knight. They are the only two I have really heard about in that price range.

Are either of those the best cooler I can buy for $40 or less?

After that, my next question is what is the better option for a push/pull setup, to buy an extra stock fan for cheap or pay a little extra for aftermarket fans?

I will most likely be using either Cooler Master R4's or Xigmatek Crystal Fans throughout my case so would it look better to use them on my cooler also or to buy plain black fans or something else for that purpose?

Thanks for the help!

Where does it say that? Not to mention the SB chips stay cool, so I believe it'd do you just fine. Just throw some Push/Pull on it.

Hyper 212+ Would be the best. But there is also the thermaltake frio for 50 bucks which is no slouch.

It's from personal experiences that I have heard this from more than actual reviews. Some people love it and some people find it minimally better than stock coolers. However, incorrect installation and TIM application can also account for a lot of that.

I can't make up my mind between the H70 and Rasa Kit so I am going to use this for a few months until I complete a few more upgrades and decide which I won't to use permanently. smile.gif

The cheaper the better here. lol This is only a temporary solution so as long as I can find something that can handle a 4.0-4.2Ghz Overclock on my 2500K, I will be very happy.

The Mugen 2 gets pretty good reviews too for a budget cooler.

But really the Hyper 212+ is great. People who have problems with it should learn how to properly apply TIM and mount a cooler before calling it over hyped. This sounds like the type of thing people who compare idle temps would have a problem with.

I'm using a Hyper 212+ and I mounted it the wrong way (heat sink blowing up instead of out the back exhaust fan) when I upgraded from my 555BE and I am to lazy to fix it now and I get 40C load temps with a 955BE @ 3.6 Ghz 1.35V.

If I fixed it, I would be around 32-35C load temps.

But all in all the Hyper 212+ is a great cooler, it just doesn't come with any comprehendable instructions, thus the reason some people bad mouth it.

I will be going with the Hyper 212+. biggrin.gif Thank You for the help on that guys.

Here are the last few questions I have:

Will I be able to fit a 200mm Side Fan in my Phantom with the Hyper 212+ which is 158mm Tall?

Are the 140mm Front Fans on the Cooler Master Storm Scouts the same as the R4's in appearance?

Is it better to simply order a 2nd stock fan for $3 from Cooler Master or should I buy two of some other types of fans to use for Push/Pull? I could always just stick two more R4's on there, but I'm afraid that too many Red Led's will look bad. Should I go plain black, red led's, or mix it up with like some white led's?

Does the Hyper 212+ come with TIM or do I need to buy that separately?

Thank You so much for the help once again!

Use the stock cooler from what I have read you can hit around 4.5 with the stock cooler and good air flow.

No, you can't. lol I OC'd it to 4 Ghz and it was exceeding 80C.

Intel stock coolers are horrible.

I do use the Hyper 212+ I run i5 2500k @ 4.5 idle is 40-43 load 68-70 Prime95. For the price it is hard to beat if your on a tight budget.
NOTE: My room is very cool and my case has very good air flow.
