What kind of overclock would set a GTX 480 on par with a GTX580 ? Has anyone made that comparison yet ?

GTX 580 is about 20% faster than GTX 480 so an educated guess would be 850 to 900 MHz on the core? and same clock on the gDDR5 as the 580

They might be equal in performance but what about noise and heat? Doesn't the 580 run significantly cooler and quieter?

Absolutely. I was just wondering how does the 480 fare against a 580 if it is overclocked appropriately. I'm planning to buy a second one. In other word, it would cost me only $300 or so to get the same performance of 2 GTX580 if I can OC the new card as well as the one I already have (900/1800/2150)

Put the 480's under water, and they can go neck and neck. But then again...580's don't NEED water to run faster

I suppose such an argument could be made, but considering the already huge difference in heat and noise output, I would say a GTX 580 is still a superior card, considering that it not only does everything the 480 does at a reasonable temperature, but also quietly.

since you already have a 480... go for a second....

it isn't worth the extra $$$$ if you already have a 480 to go to the 580....

and the actual overall performance difference.. is actually only 10%

I would say its about 10-15% on most games. You have 6% more shaders and then some refinements to z culling and FP16 texture processing. In theory assuming perfect scaling of the cores and perfect scaling of clock speeds you would need a 823 Mhz GTX480 to match a stock GTX580 (Memory speed seems to have little or no effect on performance). This ignores the fact that a GTX580 can also be overclocked quite heavily and has slightly better SLI scaling.

However, the architectural improvements in GF110 don't really warrant people to upgrade from the GF100 GPUs unless the temps or noise is a big issue (power draw is largely moot in real world scenarios).
