Heat is one component. The main one is leakage current. It all depends on the properties of the silicon used and any impurities. Some silicon can handle all the current, so when you pump more, it becomes less efficient; hence the curve.

he is right leakage is directly related to power output, with transistors you have a few kinds, some that do a lot of work some that do not so much work and those in between. The transistor does a certain amount or work in comparison to heat, now part of that work is actually usable and the rest is considered leakage. The ratio of usable work to leakage is fixed so you increase work you increase leakage. But transistors are not created equal, those in GPUs do a lot of work you get a ton of leakage, for instance in the Fermi the problem was that there were high leakage transistors in slow data paths, the 500 GTX series is the same engineering except for a few add-ons except that they rearranged the transistors so that they put those transistors with higher leakage into the path of more activity and moved the low leakage ones into low activity pathways, and added a third type of transistor to fill in where neither high nor low were acceptable. THat is how they cut down the TDP.

Well it is 11 years old, so I'm going to assume its down on compression a bit.

Either way, like you said, it all adds up, I was mostly just talking about the veyron.

The Hennessey viper makes 1000bhp and can do 255MPH in the standing mile, so obviously it doesn't take 1000bhp to do that fast, but depending on weight, and aerodynamics it can.

It was simply for reference sake...

my car made 90hp new so now I'd guess around 84-85 and it'll do 125mph easy
