New card, New problems

So to start at the beginning, I played WoW on my onboard graphics card for ~4 years. Then I bought a graphics card cheaply off my friend. (xfx radeon 4650 hd) (which he replaced with an upgraded card) The card had no problems on his computer. When I tried it, it worked for around 12-36 hours at first..then my computer would shut off, and I'd hear a high pitched sound like the fan was spinning full speed. I'd turn off my computer and then turn it back on. in 5 minutes -3 hours it would happen again. And this went on decreasing in time before it happened each time. Taking the card out, my computer worked fine.

Eventually I bought a 430w psu to go with it..upgrading from my 250w...same problems...So I figured I'd just buy a new card. I went out and bought a ATI MSI R5670. With this card I have a new, although similar problem. With this card my computer will stay on for a random amount of time. Sometimes it will shut off before I can install the drivers, and sometimes it will shut off 3 hours later. Although this shut off is a bit different. When it shuts off I can still hear sound for at least 10 - 20 seconds. And then to turn on the computer I have to press the button as if I'm turning it off, and then again to turn it on. (and I do not hear any high pitch sounds like the last card)

So I took the card back to the store, and they tested it on their computer for 3 days straight. No problems...and now I have no clue what to do to fix this issue.

Also I found out that the first card works perfectly fine on my brothers computer that he recently built, so that card had no problems with it either.

Any idea what this problem could be? and how to fix it? thank you for any help you can (or try to) give.

Sounds like it's time to get a new mother board and CPU that system is 5 years old,
and that means it's time.

Time to upgrade

Why waste the money putting a new card of any in a outdated system.. Make the plunge. Want to play

Got to pay.. Sad but its true....

Buying another GPU card may only stress the system again, and by the sounds of it the mobo and other components have already been under excessive strain.
I think you should save back and get to a newer system.

fanboy?

this isn't a driver issue smart one.

drivers don't make your computer shut down.
