Is my upgrade enough?

Thread Starter
My goal is to play all games with the following settings:
1280x1024
16x Anisotropic filtering
4x MSAA
High or medium settings
stable fps(+30)

And of course im damn low in budget. With this in mind im planning to get these hardwares:
phenom II 940 BE(and oc it to 4 GHz)
cooler master hyper 212+
HD 6850(MSI cyclone so i can oc it to 1 GHz)

The question is that is this upgrade enough for me?
If yes which board has the highest oc potential.MSI or Asus?
And please dont recommend Intel/Nvidia!
Thanks already

Yeah. Since your playing at 1280x1024! You would probably maxed out most of the games! (I think! )
The setup will be fine but unless you're planning to upgrade to water cooling a 4ghz OC is being optimistic. I have an x4 955 BE and the hyper 212+ in push/pull config and anything past 3.8 ghz makes me worry about temps (but than I'm considered conservative cutting off at 55 degrees).

Not sure on overclocking the 6850.

Aside that, I have the 6870 and at those resolutions you'll be fine. Just learn to play around with the CCC controls or Rivatuner to find the max eye candy for FPS. I have different profiles for all my games and it helps a lot.

You should list what games you play so people can get a better idea.

you already have quad core athlon , u realy wanna spend cash on phenom for some 2-3 fps increase ? here's my advice :
upgrade mobo to AM3 since ur using ddr2 mobo and cheap ram
buy 4 GB DDR cas 7-8
buy 6850
update drivers
play
Diablo 3 24/7

Or.. just keep the motherboard (and CPU) he has now, buy a 4gb kit of DDR2, and the 6850. That's all he needs.

And a bigger monitor. Does he really need a 6850 for 1280x1024?

TBH I would wait for AM3+ before dumping cash at your rig.
Athlon x4 to Phenom x4 isn't going to be a substantial upgrade.

Monitor should be upgraded when you do the GPU.
Waiting on X399

Yeah.... just get 2gig of more ram and the 6850, and you're set. Upgrading to a phenom won't do much for you, yours is already a quad at 3.5ghz, that's plenty for anything out there. So save money for now and wait for Bulldozer I guess? that's what i would do. Also, you might wanna read up on 6850's drivers and if there's a major problem with the card, I got the 6970 and the drivers are being a pain; they won't OC the card for me in CCC, and some games run at much lower fps than expected.

you're going to have some trouble getting the 940 to 4.0 with air cooling most likely. 3.7-3.8 is fairly common with those chips but 4.0 seems to be hit or miss. good luck though

and yes, that should be fine for that rez

If the x4 can do 3.6G, I would keep it and just upgrade the GPU to 6850/6870.
