Why waste you're money on the 1 gb version? add an extra $30 dollar and you can get 2gb version, unlock shaders, and voltage control.

My vote is 6950 2gb ($289.99) any model that can unlock.

I would suggest HD6950 2GB for 2 reasons:

a. its almost certainty of unlocking to HD6970

b. cheaptest 2GB costs less than cheapest 1GB in Newegg as of today:

2GB: HIS for US$260 (free shipping)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-355-_-Product

1GB: XFX for US$265 ($8 shipping)
http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category...-Video-Devices

If that US$15 is critical and $250 is not to be over, then there are a variety of GTX560 now right at US$250.

Also, do not count on unlocking a HD6950 1GB to a 6970 because the PCB design of the 1GB version is different from the 2GB's and secondly, there is simply no such thing as a 1GB version of 6970 and thirdly, there is no report of success in the net (yet).

I'm buying a 560 in 2 weeks.

I'm choosing it over the 6950 for two reasons:

1. From the bench's I've seen, the 560 overclocked beats a 6950 overclocked.
2. I love my 8800GT, and I'm in love with nvidia's driver support.

The 6950 is the faster card.

AFAIK, no.
The 6950 is still faster than the GTX560 even without unlocking though.

GTX 560 Ti mainly for three reasons

1: PhysX
2: CUDA (folding@home)
3: Overclocks like a Biatch

The 560 Ti has opengl 4.1 and the 6950s only have opengl 3.2. Does it matter a lot?
Well it is a matter of preference MLAA vs Physx basically. Both cards fall in the same range. It sounds good to spend couple of bucks more for the 6950 2GB just for the sake of unlocking but personally I would go with 560ti due to the lower temperatures comparing to a reference 6950/70.
